I firmly believe that gym class should not be a mandatory part of a college schedule. Simply put, I think this in large part due to the fact that other venues and activities exist for the opportunity to get oneself in shape, as well as the point that why should a student be made to take a class when he is paying a lot of money out of his or her own pocket for their tuition? He or she should be given their own choice when it comes to taking a physical education course of any kind. While the opportunity to take the class should remain, the choice to make such a class mandatory is imprudent and arbitrary, at best.
If someone wishes to get themselves in shape, they can find the time to go to a gym, or find the time to run a track. As busy as a student’s life is, it is not so busy that some time cannot be put aside for their own health and physical well being. In fact, this should be one of a student’s most important priorities, and should not be difficult to pencil into a schedule. There are many ways outside of class that a student can get exercise. They could walk, run, swim, work out, play any variety of sports; the list can be unending. In short, activity can be done so it is both healthy and something a student wants to do. So why implement it as a mandatory activity that some students would not want to participate in? Some may feel that they already get enough exercise as it is: there would be no need to participate in a physical education class as they already have put in their work off school hours.
College is extraordinarily expensive. As the number of college applicants applying to universities across the country continues to skyrocket, as does the tuition costs associated with going to college. In fact, this college plans upon raising its tuition for the upcoming Fall 2008 semester to fifteen thousand six hundred dollars. You would think that…...

Why Colleges Should Get Paid

...SPM 210 Why should College Athletes Get Paid? By Calvin Mainor E013280 11/20/2013   Under current NCAA regulations, "all student athletes are prohibited from receiving any payment for their efforts". Exploited athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools, and never see a dime. Is this fair? The universities, coaches, boosters, scouts for recruiting purpose are all getting paid off the players. But the major reasons why the stadiums and arenas are filled up are because of the players but they don’t see a penny of the money. Some universities build academic buildings on campus with the money that the players make for the school. Some coaches even get a percentage of the tickets revenue from the home games the players get nothing. The school pays coaches millions of dollars to coach the player who do the work. The college athletes are slaves to the schools and the coaches. The coaches treat the players as workhorses; the student-athletes can’t even choose their own major sometimes. The student-athletes can’t have a job so where are they supposed to get money from. People say that student-athletes get four-year scholarship, or a free education, but that is not true. Student-athletes only get a year to year scholarship which they can be dropped from the scholarship for a number of reasons. The idea of college athletes being slaves have to get settled for the greater good of athletes and institutions graduation rates. College sports are big......

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...Andrea Scharen EN110.6.4 “Why College Education is important to me?” College education to me holds the key to a successful career and a brighter future. I chose to go to college right out of high school because I knew I wanted a future in what I love and I already knew what I had to plans to do. I also knew that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do without a college education. I believe without a college education you can only really get a basic job. With a college education, you are more likely to become financially stable in the long run. Having a college or higher education can also equip a person with better life skills and improves an individual’s quality of life. Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to work with children. As I got older I figured out that I wanted to be a teacher. As I hit high school I contemplated even going to college because I was told you can be a basic pre-school teacher without a college education. Though I did not want to just be a basic teacher and I took into consideration that later in life I might want to teach a little older. So I decided a college education was important to have so I can do what I planned. Without a college education you are limited to a basic job. Although with a high school education you may secure a job with good benefits but even that is limited to jobs in service, manufacturing, and construction industries. The argument to that statement is with a college education you can enter a higher level career with a......

Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

...Why College Athletes Should not be Paid Kim Howard Sullivan University ENG204X: Advanced Writing November 1, 2015 Each year as March Madness begins the big debate begins of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Why is this? Some of the top universities begin to see a mass exodus of their best athletes who are mostly undergraduate students. While most believe these athletes exit school early and join the professional leagues due to the large amount wealth they could earn. In my opinion I do not feel these student-athletes should be paid above and beyond what any other student should receive. However, I can appreciate and empathize with the viewpoints of both sides. College athletics, more specifically men’s basketball and football, provides an enormous amount of revenue for schools. However, this is not a true statement for many schools. The more prominent universities, such as Duke, University of Kentucky, and Florida State University, will receive the income and the smaller colleges struggle to just maintain their programs. This is one reason for the conflict. College athletes believe they should reap the benefits of their efforts (Gregory & Fulton, 2005). First of all, attending college and playing sports is a choice not a requirement. The choice of playing athletics is part of the experience of attending a college or a university. As such, they become student-athletes with the emphasis on student. Student-athletes are in fact paid to...

Should Attendance Be Mandatory or Optional for College Courses?

...A mandatory attendance policy does not really enhance students' school performance as it's usually expected. Having an optional attendance policy would enable students to get the most out of their time and their education. Attending class regularly does not mean students will have better understanding or performance. Some students sometimes miss class, but they still study well. However, they have to come to class, or their grade would be decreased due to poor attendance. How can teachers put knowledge into the heads of these students? They sit in class, but they feel very distracted. They even disturb other students who are paying attention to the lessons. Does it worsen the situation? If teachers let such students choose whether to attend class or not, maybe the class environment would be better. In the classroom students raise ideas and ask questions about what they are still unclear about after reading assigned books or doing homework. It's not the place where those who lack interest are forced to listen to what they do not like. For this reason, students should be given right to decide whether to attend class or not. A mandatory attendance policy discourages independent thinking, self-discipline, and self-study. Students are adults. Adult students can decide what is best for them. With younger students this policy is necessary for many reasons such as safety reasons. However, adult students cannot be forced to do what they don’t want to do. That will form in them a......
