WFM Assignment Final Draft

A couple of years ago I had the duty to be the captain of my local football team. During this time I built confidence in myself immensely. Today I will be talking about how the theme of duty builds confidence in the story of Wee Free Men. Proving this I will use 3 examples and quotes from the text. The first example I will use is on page 11 when Tiffany has the duty of looking after Wentworth. I will also use an example on page 243 when Tiffany forcefully orders Roland to crack the nut as well as on page 253 when Tiffany orders the Wee Free Men to find refuge from the nightmares in the trees. Tiffany’s confidence increases when she becomes selfless, fulfilling her duty of looking after her family and friends.

In chapter 1 when Tiffany looks after Wentworth she builds up her confidence. This example located on page 11 when Tiffany states “Wentworth would be sticky. It didn’t seem to come from anywhere. He just got sticky. But he was an easy child to mind, provided you stopped him eating frogs.” This example shows Tiffany has the selfless duty of looking after Wentworth and in doing so she is able to build up confidence in herself.

In chapter 11 Tiffany shows that she builds her confidence when she forcefully orders Roland to crack the nut. A quote to prove this is on page 243 when Tiffany hastily whispers to Roland “Crack the nut! Don’t worry about what I do! Just crack the nut!” This is a prime example as it shows that Tiffany is building up confidence in herself and that she now has the confidence to order her friends around to do what is best for them.

In chapter 11 when Tiffany orders the Wee Free Men to head for the trees she shows that she has build up confidence. This is stated on page 253 when Tiffany yells to the Wee Free Men “The way to fight nightmares is to wake up! I am your Kelda! This is an order, head for those…...

Free Will

... Reading Chapter 4 and 5 of Ultimate Questions The point of this assignment is for you to compare and contrast your view of the philosophical issues of free will and personal identity with the philosophical theories explained by the author of your textbook. After you read each chapter, take some time to check the statement that comes closest to your view (and summarizes a philosophical theory explained by the author). Free will or determinism? When I think about the extent of my freedom to choose in life, I believe that human beings are False absolutely free to choose whatever path in life seems best to them (libertarianism) True are sometimes free, but sometimes have their choices shaped by social, cultural and psychological forces over which they have no control (soft determinism – traditional compatibilism) False are choosing freely only if what it is they say they want is something whose consequences they understand and is a goal or desire that is genuinely good for them (deep self-compatibilism) False are completely determined in all their choices by what has come before – their biology, social forces, etc. (hard determinism) Please explain in a few sentences here why you selected the option you did. Raise at least one question about the position you have taken. I have taken the position of soft determinism because while I believe we have free will- I believe that our free will is limited by probability. I do however wonder if it is......

Black Men in Public Spaces

...Black Men and Public Spaces by Brent Staples (1986) My first victim was a woman – white, well dressed, probably in her early twenties. I came upon her late one evening on a deserted street in Hyde Park, a relatively affluent neighborhood in an otherwise mean, impoverished section of Chicago. As I swung onto the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us. Not so. She cast back a worried glance. To her, the youngish black man – a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket – seemed menacingly close. After a few more quick glimpses, she picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest. Within seconds she disappeared into a cross street. That was more than a decade ago. I was twenty-two years old, a graduate student newly arrived at the University of Chicago. It was in the echo of that terrified woman's footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I'd come into-the ability to alter public space in ugly ways. It was clear that she thought herself the quarry of a mugger, a rapist, or worse. Suffering a bout of insomnia, however, I was stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers. As a softy who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken – let alone hold it to a person's throat – I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once. Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny. It also made it clear that I was......

Free Will

...PHL 458 CRITICAL THINKING | | Week One Assignment | | | The definition of free will is; the power of making free choices that are unconstrained by external circumstances or by an agency such as fate or divine will. We use free will to form thoughts by allowing ourselves to completely let go of all external and internal influences to create a free will thought. Truth is defined as; “is what is so about something, the reality of the matter, or as distinguished from what people wish were so, believe to be so or assert to be so.”Ruggiero, 2009 in other words a statement proven to be or accepted as true. We use the truth to form ideas or thoughts but must then test that thought or theory for it to be a truth then we can add to that truth or validate that truth. The definition of knowledge is the facts, feelings or experiences known by a person or group of people. We use knowledge to form thoughts by using understanding gained through experiences, observations or from report from other people to form our thoughts. The word opinion is defined as; a belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof. We use our opinions to form thoughts by one, expressing our likes and dislikes and by our personal judgments. Free Will

...Maddie Kaipare Ms. Gladfelter Comp II Comp II 10/07/2014 Freewill In the plays ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ and ‘Antigone’ social injustice plays a recurring role in the lives of Antigone and the Younger Family. For Antigone, freedom of free will is ripped from her while the Younger family, even though they have free will, do not seem to make use of it. Freedom and control are the two elements evident in these two plays. Antigone tries relentlessly to procure hers by standing up for what she believes is right, while the Younger family holds on to the past letting it dictate their freedom and control both the present and future. Some might say that Antigone was stubborn and foolish for not letting go of her beliefs but she was portraying her free will and freedom to do what she thought was right. A perfect example of this was when Creon asked her if she was the one who committed the ‘crime/burial, “Do you deny you did this, yes or no?” “Antigone replies, I did it. I don’t deny a thing” (Antigone- 1322). She had the courage, guts, and tenacity to exercise her own discretion and did not fear adversity. The Youngers, on the other hand, are quite the opposite. Although they had the right of freewill and control, they never seemed to take any chances to live for the future but rather let the past undermine what was present and ahead. Mama, seems to be living by rules that her dead husband had set forth and cannot seem to break away from them. For example when Ruth says “Now what...

12 Angry Men Assignment

...the problem the group is working on. In this film, the numerous functional and dysfunctional properties of the 12-jury men play a big role in analysing and evaluating the main purpose at hand, namely identifying the young man guilty or innocent for the murder of his father. The different roles the 12-jury men play in the deliberation of the capital murder case is prominent. Firstly, a role can be defined as a set of expected behaviour patterns attributed to someone occupying a given position in a social unit. Different groups enforce different role requirements on individuals namely; role expectation, role perception and role conflict. (i) Role expectation: Role expectation can be defined as the role others believe a person should play or the way others believe a person should act in a given situation. When looking at the Jurors’ main role in any court system and in the film, it is expected of them to decide whether or not the defendant should be declared guilty or not guilty. (ii) Role perception: Role perception can be defined as the individual’s view of how he or she should act in a given situation. When looking at the film the Jurors individual frame of position and prejudices influence how they individually perceive the case. Because the Jurors perceptions are unique it leads to complications in the communication process. In the film “12 Angry men” Juror no. 3 decides beforehand that it is an “open and shut case”. He validates his verdict by using emotionally......
