As the theorist Michel Foucault examines history to explore the layers of structure of power, I find the history of wedding tradition to be fascinating. “He uses history to dispel the sort of routine, instituted self-assurance people have about reality of such entities as the mental disorders they fear they may be suffering from, or the inner sexual needs they believe they have to release. Foucault has examined various kinds of systems of thought through which people have come to identify themselves as subjects.”(Rajchman) And then another good quote about Michel Foucault is “For more than a decade, his elegant shaved skull had been an emblem of political courage-a cynosure of resistance to institutions that would smother the free spirit and stifle the right to be different.” (Miller 13) I will be exploring how the present days views are reinforced; the dominant message of how a wedding should be and then how in some movies, the post-feminism is displayed which slightly alters this dominant image. I will be also exploring the mix of cultural traditions within the wedding to see how the structure is similar or drastically different. I will discuss Marx’s Materialism ideology aspect of the domination of the ruling class and explore the aspect of the base and superstructure with the mode of production/the system of economic relations within the institutions surrounding wedding ideology. Through close textual analysis, I will show the dominant ideology of the wedding industry as illustrated through media and the attitudes of various woman; comparing views of two extremes to the leading up to that of the dominant American wedding ideology of the industry and secondly, I will then contrast this structuralism to that of a few other cultural films to explore the obstacles as well as end result of the dominant media ideology. “Capitalism is not only an economic…...

The food vendor is parked in the parking lot and the man outside is placing a food order. There is a story being exchanged between the two men with medium shots taken place. ...Film Analysis of “The Graduate” The 1967 film by Mike Nicoles “The Graduate” is about Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate, who is at a crossroads in his life. He is caught between adolescence and adulthood searching for the meaning of his upper middle class suburban world of his parents. He then began a sexual relationship with the wife of his father’s business partner, Mrs. Robinson. Uncomfortable with his sexuality, Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson continue an affair during which she asked him to stay away from her daughter, Elaine. Things became complicated when Benjamin was pushed to go out with Elaine and he falls in love with her. Mrs. Robinson sabotaged the relationship and eventually the affair between Mrs. Robinson and Benjamin is discovered. Understandably, Elaine runs back to college. Benjamin follows her to school determined not to let her get away and ultimately disrupted her wedding. In the end, Elaine runs off with Benjamin uncertain about her pre-determined destination. “The Graduate” cannot possibly begin to unravel the several very complex themes that run throughout the film. The coming of age story as the film attempted to relay a message of innocent being push in an unwanted direction through a society filled with expectations. ...Rear Window Film Review Dawn B ARTS/100 Introduction to the Visual and Performing Arts June 24, 2013 Alfred Hitchcock was considered the master of suspense, and with very good reason. Hitchcock had a very productive film making career in which he made 53 major films. His production of Rear Window, a movie based on the short story by Cornell Woolrich titled, “It Had to be Murder” ("A Work In Progress,” 2013) is one of his most famous. I have seen Rear Window several times over the years, the first time in an art house theater in Lake Tahoe, California. It is my favorite Hitchcock film, and I looked forward to watching again. I relaxed in my recliner with a glass of wine to enjoy this Hitchcock masterpiece after everyone had gone to bed on Thursday evening, June the 20th. Rear Window opens on an apartment complex courtyard- peering into the windows of the people who live there. The camera tracks up and shows the audience a woman getting ready for the day. The camera tracks down and to the left to see the milkman walking away and into the street behind the building before tracking back around to the protagonist, L.B. Jeff Jefferies (James Stewart) in his apartment. A close up on Jefferies reveals the sweat on his forehead before cutting over to a wall thermometer showing how hot it is. Panning over, viewers get a closer look at the various people from the apartment across the street. The viewer sees a neighbor with shaving cream......

...Madison Gensurowsky Film analysis Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln” begins at the time of the Civil War when President Lincoln was demanding the war’s end. Within the first scene the brutality of the war is shown, mainly against black soldiers. Race was a huge issue at the time the film takes place and that was Lincoln’s largest struggle as he tried to keep the nation as one. The film takes place in the 1860’s and reveals that white privilege was a central belief at the time. However, the way that white people are portrayed in the film suggests that not much has changed in that respect. The idea of white privilege suggests that white people see themselves as just humans, people without a race. Privilege is a way of thinking that “generally allows people to assume a certain level of acceptance, inclusion, and respect in the world, to operate within a relatively wide comfort zone” (Rothenberg, 103). At the time of the civil war, white people took it upon themselves to decide who gets taken seriously and who is accountable to whom for what. They assumed superiority among every other race, as they were humans who had no race, they were simply humans. White people, men in particular, were entitled to any and every freedom that the Constitution allowed. In this film, Lincoln is fighting to pass the thirteenth amendment, which would free the slaves and end the devastation of the Civil War. ...Film Analysis Requiem for a Dream Eventually, addiction causes the lives of individuals to spiral downward in a desperate search to regain the sense of balance and pleasure that their addiction initially gave them. This downward spiral either leads to recovery or continued hopelessness and eventual death. Director Darren Aronofsky's 2000 film "Requiem for a Dream" illustrates this idea perfectly as this work chronicles this descending spiral experienced by its characters.  For example, as the movie opens, a housewife is in the process of chaining her television to a radiator. This is because she is trying to prevent her son from using it to get the money he needs to support his drug habit. The housewife's efforts fail, as her son frees it and then wheels it down the street to a pawnshop (Ebert, 2000). All of the characters engage in desperate acts to support their addiction. Harry and his best friend Tyrone obtain a large amount of heroin, believing that the profit from selling it will make them rich. However, their behavior is disinhibited because they use so much of it themselves that they wind up using more of it than they sell (Bowers, 2010). Marion, Harry's girlfriend, prostitutes herself to support her heroin addiction and winds up not only losing Harry, but also her sense of self (Bowers, 2010).  Marion plays a key role in enabling heroin addiction, not only for her, but also for Tyrone and Harry, as it is her prostitution that supplies the money......

...Major Essay: Question One Musical films have been present in Hollywood since The Jazz Singer (1927) premiered. Mast states that a film is a musical when the primary entertainment and investment lie in the musical numbers (p. 309, Wood, 2008). Musical films are often a beloved or hated genre due to the unrealistic nature of characters erupting into song and dance. This essay analyse four main conventions of the musical genre the spectacle, the narrative, the adaption of established stories and the power the combination of lyrics and music can achieve on screen. Examples from different periods in Hollywood will be used to explore these conventions and how they apply and have evolved to suite conventions of modern cinema. Kellner (2005) explains spectacles have been present in different cultures since pre-modern times. Examples of these spectacles include plays, the Olympics of Ancient Greece, in Ancient Rome public offerings of bread, circuses and gladiator games (Kellner, 2005). The human desire for the spectacle has not fallen into extinction but rather evolved with society and technology. Entertainment has always been a prime field of the spectacle and film has been one of the most productive industries to utilise the spectacle (Kellner, 2005). ...A violin, a knife, and a psychopath with mommy issues walk into a shower… Director Alfred Hitchcock, known for his affiliation with films specifically in the realm of horror, is able to present the notion of murder and mental illness in his 1960 film Psycho. Through the usage of elements such as dark visuals accompanying symbolism, and the character exploitation of Norman Bates, Hitchcock provides a suspenseful yet foreboding storyline for his audience. To begin with, I will introduce how Hitchcock utilized various visual techniques to inter-relate the concepts of murder and mental illness. As a whole, the film itself provides a very dark ambiance which can serve as a foreshadowing of Norman’s darker side; his split personality which the audience does not fully encounter until the end of the film but only receiving quick minor glimpses of throughout the film. One of the most prevalent parts of the film that depict this braking through of a darker side is when Norman eats dinner with Marion Crane. Through the dialogue in their conversation about Norman’s mother, we see the split personality becoming slowly more prevalent. This can especially be seen when Marion mentions putting his mother in “someplace,” referring to an institution, Norman’s face develops into this sinister look where his face falls behind the shadows while his eyes suddenly lights up; in this scene, Norman’s true character is hinted at and subtly foreshadows what is later to come. ...Film Analysis „Outsourced (2006) Introduction In the film “Outsourced” Todd Anderson works as a call-centre manager, also called order fulfilment manager with the Seattle based company „Western Novality“. As they outsource their office to Gharapuri, India Mr Anderson has to travel there and train his replacement. During the film there are a lot of misunderstanding concerning cultural differences. As the film goes on Mr Anderson starts to accept the Indian culture and the Indian worker engage more in the American culture. In this paper I am introducing two scenes from the film that hold misunderstanding and analyse and explain them. „The missing glass“ and office scenes As we first see the office of Mr Anderson in Seattle (00:58) we can monitor that each worker has his own big cubicle, which offers a lot of private space and the boss Dave has his own closed office with even more space for private enclosure (01:14-03:38). Compared to the Indian office we can observe that the employers have a lot less space for themselves and they interact with each other more frequently and also enjoy doing that (18:47). Even the office of the supervisor lacks privacy because of the missing glass (19:06-19:08). As a recurring motive we see Mr Anderson making comments about the missing glass. ...Andrea Carrion 07/17/2015 Second Film Scene Analysis ‘Casablanca’ Casablanca (1942) is a melodramatic film, which was directed by Michael Curtiz. The film mixes many different topics like love, politics and war. I find it to be a very interesting and amazing film, also I love the fact that it’s still in black & white. This story takes place during World War II in Casablanca, Morocco. During that time the French controlled Casablanca and in order to get out you needed a passport or permit. The main characters in the story are Rick Blaine, Ilsa Lund, Victor Laszlo, Sam (the pianist) and Captain Renault. Throughout the film the feelings between Ilsa and Rick are portrayed and it helps you understand that at some point they probably were in love, but that love didn’t consumed and the feelings between them are something that remain unsolved. On the other side of the story when Ilsa appears in Casablanca, she’s not with Rick anymore. Instead, she’s married to Victor and this is part of the drama of the story because it’s kind of a love triangle, even though nothing happens between her and Rick. But as audience you can still get the fact that they still have feelings for each other, for example when she tells Sam “Play it Sam, play our song” and at some other point she thinks about letting go Victor to stay in Casablanca with Rick. ...Drama 3030 Film Analysis The movie Casino is a 1995 American crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese. This film shows the power, authority and money the mobsters in Las Vegas had. Sam “Ace” Rothstein is seen as a powerful boss man, with authority and urgency. He establishes his presence in his casino from the beginning, entering on a red carpet while a valet parked his car. The city of Las Vegas was used as a contrast to the empty desert around the thriving city. This bright, money making town is filled with exciting opportunities while the desert is compared to a graveyard. Las Vegas was a luxurious, late night city that catered to every need as long as you had money. Power and authority was a recurring theme during the film. The hierarchy of power was always stressed, there was always a boss and Ace was the biggest one at the casino. Ace had to answer to the mobsters that offered him the position. This was just a routine pay out he did every month, or they would send their own man to collect it. They had the power to influence politicians and accountants that would fake the books with their money. They were the driving authority behind every move in Las Vegas, especially at the Tangiers. The casino had many illegal operations. Scorsese takes the viewer behind the scene to understand how the Italian mobsters made money. Ashby begins the film introducing Harold Chasen, with a close up tracking his feet, not allowing the viewers to see his face, until two minutes in the film, however even then, his face is hard to make out because the only source of light comes from the window. The moment we do see his face, Ashby reveals the relationship between him and his mother. From the moment we meet Harold, it is obvious that he is anything but joyful. He is pale, dead looking, wearing fancy suits and ties black, grey and brown. Black being a color of grief helps to show his obsession with death has him looking like death. Ashby takes the audience along with Harold to one of his favorite spots, a cemetery. Here we are introduced with a vibrant, old woman named Maude. They come into contact at a funeral and we notice their distinctive personalities. Maude wearing pink and Harold wearing a dark suit again. As their relationship becomes more intimate we begin to see this transition with Harold's costume, from these dull monochrome colors to light patterned, printed shirts. Another example of his distinct costume change is presented at Maude’s birthday, Harold is wearing a tinted light pink shirt, black sport coat, bright red tie, bright red pocket square. I decided to choose this film because as I read what it was about in some websites I saw that it was both a romance and comedy film, and romance movies . I also noticed that Adam Sandler was in this film, and since I have seen a couple of his movies, I know they are hilarious. I actually ended up liking this movie a lot. The film is about Henry Roth, a veterinarian in a water park located in Hawaii. He dates many tourist girls for one night only because he is afraid that if he gets involved in a serious relationship with a local girl, this might stop him from going to Alaska to study walruses (something he dreams about doing). One day as he sails on his ship, “The Sea Serpent”, it broke down and went to a nearby café located of the coast and a woman caught his eye. He did not go up to her because he assumed it was a local woman. The next day, he went to the café again and saw her there again, but this time he decides to go up to the woman. The woman’s name is Lucy. They get along very well and there is an instant connection between them. They agree to meet at the café the next day for breakfast. Growing up in Williamsburg, I learned to clothe it in comedy to spare myself problems—like a punch in the face."
