Effects of Violent Video Games
Over 90% of youth in Canada aged between 12 and 17 play or have played a violent video game throughout their life. The industry is now a 91.95 billion dollar market with the top selling series being “Call of Duty” a violent, gruesome, but entertaining first person shooter. A study conducted by Harvard Health Publications says that, “Youth exposure to violent media (including video games) can contribute to real-life violent behavior and harm children in many other ways.” Recently debates have been sparked as to whether violent video games are actually as bad as they seem. Realistic graphics technology, first hand engagement and behavioural changes are all effects as to why an older generation will respond negatively to a widely popular video game while a younger generation who engage in these video games will not.
Graphics have improved significantly through the years of gaming and it has become very hard to tell the difference between fake and real. From blasting out enemy brains with an automatic machine gun to stabbing innocent bystanders, this is what the gamers have always wanted. Gamers have complained about how graphics were never good enough. Is it really healthy for our youth to be witnessing these gruesome events in such realistic situations? An article written by Tech Times states that, “The research evidence clearly indicates that the violence can make them (gamers) numb to the pain and suffering of others.” Can a video game really affect how we view pain and suffering in the real world? The graphics that are displayed in these games are unimaginable and scarring to older generations, but the younger generation loves the thrill given by the realistic graphics.

The general out look of people who just jump on the band wagon because they heard something from a friend, assume that violent video games lead to violent outbreaks from the game user. As you will soon find out, I strongly disagree with all of them. I personally don’t feel that the violence in video games is what sets people off. If anything video games can be used for stress relief, at least that’s what I do. When I am starting to get irritated or annoyed by a friend I will just put on Call of Duty and just get lost in my own little world for a while, until I forget about why I was irritated or until I’m just in a better mood. It may just be me but it is almost a guaranteed stress relief. The only time it doesn’t work is when whoever it is that is irritating me doesn’t leave me alone, even while I’m trying to drop the subject or whatever it may be. I have grown up on watching horror movies and violent video games my entire life, and I assure you I don’t go around looking for people to start problems with, and I especially don’t copy scenes out of video games to hurt anyone. Studies show that violent crimes, particularly among the young, have dramatically decreased since the early 1990s. During the same time, video games have increased in popularity and use, exactly the opposite of what one would expect if there were a link between the two.
