Sound of Love Life whispers in our soul and speaks to our heart. Sometimes, we don't have time to listen. Do we sometimes ignore lovely things because our lives are too fast and busy leaving them to wonder whether we really love them? I thought I was a patient man, but I was not until I met a nine year old boy. He let me know that people should pay attention to the small things, even a smile or a sound. I was almost tortured to the point of madness by my neighbors when I arrived in Omaha. I lived in a cheap place so I had to put up with the noise. One of my neighbors is a guy from Nepal, an international college student who only goes to school on Tuesdays and works six days a week for tuition and bills. Ironically he was a delivery man whose car engine sounded like an asthma patient with a megaphone. Every night when I had just fallen asleep in bed, the car would be back with its “cough” to wake me up. Another neighbor was Korean and bought a saxophone; he liked early morning practice the best. Every night I was devoid of sleep from drowsiness by the car, and I was woken up by the saxophone’s weeping sound in the early morning. I often, out of anger from sleep deprivation, wanted to make my way over to speak with them both, but didn’t right away. That car is the Nepalese guy’s career; and the saxophone is the Korean guy’s hobby. How could I let them give up their career and hobby? On behalf of my well-being, I decided to move out. I vented my grievances to Julie who is one of my friends, and I hoped that she could help me find a good place to live. I stayed in her townhouse; it was a wonderful place in downtown Omaha. It is quiet and beautiful, close to Omaha’s Old Market; people can take a walk in the evening. In an hour, people got off from work; it seems the noises were returning…...

Sounds of English

...Sounds of English: Introduction English Within English there are roughly 50 unique sounds(phonetics).  These 50 sounds are represented by 26 letters, alone or in combination with one another (orthography).  The sound system of English consists of about 2/3 consonants, which are either voiced or voiceless depending on which sounds surround them, and 1/3 vowels, which may be long or short depending on where they fall within a word (phonology). Of these sounds, vowels are fairly well understood and will not be addressed too heavily in this series.  Vowels are also more difficult to discuss definitively because many of them vary by dialect.  Consonants shall be the focus of these discussions on English, and to understand consonants, it is necessary to be familiar with the organs of the vocal tract used to produce them.   Consonants The 30+ consonants in English, consist of the following types: * Plosives/Stops* * Fricatives * Affricates *Stops are technically the first two parts of a plosive, with the third part being a sudden expelling of air as a release.  Without this ‘explosion‘ of air, a plosive is merely a stop. * Nasals * Liquids * Glides The first three involve some type of halting or obstructing the flow of air. They always occur as voiced and voiceless pairs, with two sounds being produced in mechanically identical ways, but with the only difference between them being the vibration (or lack of vibration) of the vocal cords. The final three types of......

Sound Education

..."Effective study skills are the sole foundation of a sound education" Effective study skills are definitely an important factor of a sound education. They don't happen overnight. They "evolve and mature through practice, trial and error, feedback from others and reflection through different stages of the course" (Cottrell,S.2008. pg1) Working on effective study skills means the individual will find out what works best. Basically "learning how to learn" (Cottrell,S. 2008. pg 48). There are many different ways in which individuals learn, for e.g. 'conscious learning' - when the individual is aware they are learning (Cottrell,S. 2008. pg 48). 'Unconscious learning' - when the individual is unaware that it is happening but it may become conscious learning when they just know something and then wonder, how did I know that (Cottrell,S. 2008. pg 48). Each person has 3 different learning styles which affect their lives. Some people learn better using visual learning such as looking at pictures or diagrams. Other people are auditory learners i.e. listening to recordings. Then there are people who are kinaesthetic or tactile learners, they like to touch and play with things. (Wyman,P. 2011). By testing all these types of learning people will see what they find easiest to use and then be able to adapt it to their......

Sound Motifs

...In the film, The Limey, there are different sound motifs that are used to help tell the narrative of the story and give the audience cues to how the action or character is related to the sound. Music or sounds help the audience associate and connect certain scenes with their implicit meaning. Wilson’s love for his daughter joined with a regret over lost time that might have, or should have been spent with her, leaves him bound to investigate and avenge her untimely death. “Tell me about Jenny”, is Wilson’s quest to find out what happened to Jenny and his quest causes the narration and action in this film. Wilson’s memories (flashbacks) of Jenny are what keeps him driven in his search for answers. The reoccurring sound motifs in this film are wind chimes, the sounds of the ocean (waves), Wilson’s humming and a unique melody of piano music. These reoccurring sound motifs aid the audience’s understanding of the film’s non chronological temporal order of the story. The film uses different sounds during flashbacks to help add or reveal new information to the viewer about Wilson’s past and the film’s scenes that occur out of the story’s chronological order. The flashbacks are used to create suspense and intrigue in the narration by gradually revealing the entire events of the story. The piano music motif is associated with Wilson’s quest for the truth about Jenny’s death. The piano music is used for different purposes throughout the film. One use of the piano music......

Love

...Love is a beautiful thing. It makes people happy. It can change a person, and show someone things that they never knew about themselves. It lifts one up, knowing there is always someone who will stand by their side through anything. It brings people together, and makes the world a better place. Some people may disagree; they might think love is just a fantasy. Either way, it is a fantasy that everyone deserves to dream of and experience in all its glory, whether straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. However, not all people are so accepting of love when it is not in the form that they are familiar with, or is not demonstrated in ways that they think are proper. This can be easily seen in society’s treatment of non-heterosexuals, especially in the cases of marriage laws, bullying by teens and young adults, and general homophobic attitudes in our culture. It is important that these situations be changed so that each and every person has the same rights and is not harshly and wrongly judged because of the sex of the person that they love. When thinking of the word “marriage,” what comes to mind? Is it long white dresses and dapper tuxedos, or a towering cake and beautiful flowers? Do sappy love songs and the first dance come to mind? Some imagine a fairytale come true, with a horse and carriage whisking the happy couple away from the church in which they nervously exchanged vows? No matter what comes to mind, most people can agree that marriage is happy, and......

The Sound of Emo

...The Sound of Emo There are many stereotypes in society for every culture or group of people. These stereotypes are often based on musical influences, personalities, activities, and fashion. I am going to focus this essay on the group of people who are known as Emo. Both positive and negative attributes come from stereotyping an Emo follower, but most of society focuses on the negative. This essay will focus on all aspects in hopes of turning some of these negative stereotypes into more positive ones. The word Emo is often used to describe anyone who is perceived as being too emotional, often too sad or too dark. The term Emo is short for “Emotional Hardcore” which describes the genre of music an Emo follower would listen to. According to author Brian Bailey (2005), “[Emo music] is characterized by feelings of vulnerability, and...confessions about adolescence. Emo music draws from various genres of music including rock, punk, indie, pop, and heavy metal...The behaviors, attitudes, and values expressed through Emo music involve...despair, nostalgia, heartbreak, hope, and self-loathing.” These emotional characteristics and topics described in this genre's music often associate with the life experiences and characteristics of its listeners. Emo music is characterized by heavy, distorted, or acoustic guitar with male vocals ranging from soft whispering to screaming. Lyrics are expressive and melancholy. Mainstream Emo bands include Dashboard Confessional, My......

Sound

...Every sound we hear around us is also part of our lives. If we look at the other side of sound, it could be our memory or rewind us back to our childhood time. Sounds come from everywhere, everything, and such as: animals, nature include weather, or objects in the environment. For me, I hear a lot of sounds in my whole life. Some of the sounds I hear can make me think back of my childhood’s memories. Summer season almost approach to us. Sound that most reminds me of the summer are related to insect, weather, and natural. Surprisingly enough, insect is the most annoying bugs at night in the summer. They are everywhere, from the grass to the trees. One night in summer day, I was sitting outside in the balcony in the dark and couldn’t see things well because I lit the candles. I heard the “buzz, zee” sound around my ear; I knew some kind of bee around me. I was terrified that night because I would look horrible if I got stung. I immediately blew the candle so the bee couldn’t see me. Lucky me, it flew away after a few minutes. Bumble bees are a big nightmare to me. So every time I see bees, I remember that night. It was a scary night but also a memory in summer. Bumble bees are friendly to some people but it is my enemy. Summer is the season of rain, thunderstorm and lightning. Everyone likes rain because it cleans out all the dirt and pollen from the trees. When I see rain, I remember my six- grade school year in my country. Back then, we wore uniform when we went to school...

Love

...Jackson Brown, Jr. that goes, “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important that your own.” To put it differently, it is when a person suffers long for someone you find yourself loving him or her. However, in the dictionary, love was only described through the intensity of the feeling. It does not explain fully what to experience inside ‘love’. Nevertheless, it all arrives in some point. Love is vulnerable, unconditional and a decision. Love means to embrace vulnerability. Vulnerability means capable of being hurt physically or emotionally. Love involves both but often times, it is the feelings that is involve. Usually, when a person loves someone, he or she tends to do everything for him or her. Even if it means getting hurt, they will still continue. Being vulnerable means accepting everything is going to happen, anything is going to happen. It sounds scary but people become this kind of people because of love without even them knowing. It won’t be a weakness because this will be their strength, they will gain courage. They will face obstacles even if it looks like they are not going to survive. It is what makes them strong. Vulnerability makes its beauty visible. It is like a balloon, it is fragile but it looks so much better if it is seen and not hidden and if it is felt and not absent. It exhibits its beauty in its own way. That’s what love becomes when it’s vulnerable. The beauty of the relationship becomes noticeable. Love means to give everything......

Love

...TO MY FIRST LOVE I can’t say that I loved you from the moment that we met. I can’t say that we were meant to be or that after years of separation we’ll finally break the walls that separate us and be one once more. I can’t say that in the time we’ve been apart I’ve become a better person, better for you….better for us. If I said anything along these lines it would have been a lie. There’s much I want to tell you and a lot that I know I shouldn’t. Let’s start at the beginning: I remember when we met. You were one of the popular people. I was not. Everyday prior to our meeting I was nothing more than a background image on a less-than-boring wall. But for some reason on this day you chose to acknowledge me. On this day you chose to talk to me. I’ll probably never know why, or care why for that matter, but you did and since then my life has never been the same. As if you pulled me into light from the dark, or as though you created something out of nothing I had existence. I had meaning in my life. And that meaning was you. I would wake up every morning just to see you smile. I would miss my bus on purpose just to spend a few extra moments in your presence. I would shed the few nickels and dimes I had to give you whatever happiness money could buy. I would have given you the earth, the moon and even the sun if it so pleased you. I would have done it all. When you’re young everyone tells you to shoot for the stars, but no one tells you how dangerous ambition can be. No......

The Sound and the Fury

...Shanee Devane October 9, 2015 One of the basic concerns in The Sound and the Fury is the absence of love in the Compson family. Traditionally in a home the mother is the typical love giving force. Mrs. Compson is a total failure and, and the exact opposite of everything a mother should be. She gives no love to any of her offspring, and her daughter Candace must assume the mother role. Benjy the youngest child of the Compsons is mentally retarded, and is completely rejected by his mother. Mrs. Compson goes as far as changing his name from her brother’s name to Benjamin so no shame will be brought upon the family. Mrs. Compson only views Benjy as some form of punishment and cannot relate to him in any way. Her reactions to him leave Benjy helpless, and the burden of motherhood is thrust onto his older sister Cadence. Mrs. Compsons incapacity to try and relate with Benjy is so intense she tries to interfere with Caddys’ relationship with him. The mother is always making remarks about why Caddy cares for him such as “You don’t need to bother with him.” He is like a diseased extension of her that she wishes did not exist. Whenever she tries to help with Benjy he only bellows louder. Benjy is not taken up with her false displays of affection, and he is aware that they are only meaningless gestures. Although Mrs. Compson rejects Benjy, Caddy lovingly offers to help with him. Therefore at a very early age she performs the functions of a mother. Caddy would rush to ask......

Animal Sounds

...ham. A Japanese dog, in turn, barks wanwan, while its counterpart in England barks bow-wow or woof.

Pigs also have different sounds depending on where you are in the world. A Mandarin Chinese pig goes hu-lu hu-lu, while further up north in Finland it goes roh roh. Next door in Sweden, a pig goes noff noff, while in Wales it goes soch soch. In the English world, a pig goes oink oink.

Bird sounds also vary around the world. In English, a small bird chirps while a medium-sized bird tweets. A larger bird, however, squawks. In Spanish, a bird goes pio pio, while in Korea it will be heard going jek jek. In French? Pit pit. Although animals sound the same the world over, humans, with our many languages, do not. Different human societies simply have different ways of describing similar sounds. Part of it is explained by the speech sounds used in a particular language. Another part by random choice – how a sound was first heard, interpreted and then evolved over thousands of years.

The English language offers especially diverse onomatopoeia. Did you know it’s the only language that confers different sounds to birds of different sizes? Maybe you know a few sounds that could be interesting. If so why don’t you take part and get in touch with us? We will love to get people’s help and expand this experiment to include more languages and more sounds!...
