What is the American Dream? Rafael Cruz once said, “Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American Dream. That’s the greatness of this country.” The American Dream depends on the person, many people have different views and what they believe in. When asking my mom, Sue Stoll what she believes the American Dream is; she stated “The American Dream in my eyes is being successful by yourself or with a significant other, overcoming obstacles, always trying to better yourself and society, and living with what you have.” Over the years, the America Dream has changed; it depends on where you were brought up, how you were brought up, and what you were taught as a young child and teen. The influence your parents had on you has a lot to do with how you want to be and how you see America. After hearing my mom’s view on the American Dream, I see where I get my idea of the American dream of. So what does the American Dream mean to me? In my eyes, the American dream is not being wealthy, living in a mansion in New York City, and having the newest and best things in the world. The American Dream in my eyes is, being happy whether you have it all or have nothing, being successful, and living the life you would be proud to look back on.
From the day I could talk my parents always told me to be thankful for what I have. As I grew older I was taught they would provide my needs but my wants was all on me. Growing up we lived a simple life, we didn’t do things or have things for show. I believe this is where I learned that having a nice car, a mansion, or being wealthy was not the American Dream because my parents are living the American Dream and we definitely don’t have a brand new house, car, and my parents make do with the money they have. They have been hard working successful individuals from the beginning way before they were married. My parents own their own heavy duty repair shop, where my dad is the mechanic and my mom is the secretary. My dad opened up this business after graduating from Wyoming-tech in 1989 and my mom soon joined him becoming his secretary. Since the day they opened their doors for business they have been successful. It does help my dad absolutely loves what he does, and my mom sure does love working right beside him. Together they make a great team. If it wasn’t for my dad’s passion and hardworking work ethic the business wouldn’t be as successful as it is. We necessarily as a family don’t have nothing but we definitely don’t have everything. My parents are completely happy with how there life is, they have a roof over their head, clothes to wear every day, food on the table, warm place to stay, and a great family. Living a life you would be proud to look back on is hard. It starts from the day you are born. I am the first one to admit I have a past life I am not proud of, but you can change and I did that. Everyone makes mistakes and learns lessons, that’s how you grow up and find out right from wrong. As my dad says, “You can’t have all sunshine and rainbows, unless you go through the tornado first.” That saying fits perfectly with the concept of everyone makes mistakes but learns from them. No one has lived a perfect life but people have lived lives they are proud of. Whether you have a family or not do things you would be proud to tell your kids, friends, or strangers you meet on the road. You may be known as the kid who went to jail when he was 20, but you can change. Everyone has that chance to change and make their future brighter. You can make people proud of you by changing and you can explain to people where you came from and what you overcame. The struggle is part of the story. To be proud of yourself there are always things you have to overcome to have that success story. America is full of people who have had rough pasts but made something of themselves after changing. They are working towards living the life they would be proud of. One mistake can’t hold you back, you are stronger than you think you are, so make the change and be proud of your life. I was always told this because of my mistakes in my past, but they don’t define me. I am living towards the life I will be proud of, graduating high school, eventually graduating college, and setting goals for myself for the future. After going to Indianapolis in 2013 for the National FFA Convention, my eyes were opened. We were walking back to our hotel walking under this bridge to pass a man who was homeless. He sat there with holes in his clothes, a blanket that looked to be one he got from garbage can, and a grungy dirty face. I couldn’t just keep walking, it just wasn’t fair. I had the opportunity to come to Indianapolis so I was going to make a difference. I stopped walking as I was leading all of us with my advisor next to me and said, “Guys look at him, appreciate everything you have because he has made a life out of nothing.” I walked back to him and gave him a few quarters and some other change I had in my pocket and said, “Hope this helps.” He smiled at me and said thank you this is my next meal. The little things could make the biggest difference. This man may not have had everything but he made a life out of the little he did have. He was happy with what he had, and what I had given him. His life may be different from ours and be a way we hope to never be but he was content with what he had and was living happily. His American Dream was different from my parents, he didn’t have roof over his head, a warm place to stay, and didn’t have food on the table every night but with the little he had to him he had everything. Everyone has a different view on the American Dream, some have a more historical view and others have a more current day view. Marilyn Monroe once said, “So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly keep smiling because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.” Throughout life I have realized that you have to keep smiling no matter how many struggles you are going through at the time, and keep your head up because you will get through it. The American Dream comes with struggles, you aren’t going to be successful without obstacles, you aren’t going to have a life you are proud of unless you make mistakes, and you definitely don’t have to everything to be happy. My American dream is one day to be as successful as my parents living a life I am proud of!

Socratic Seminar

...was short and ugly and only possessed life’s necessities. This shows that he didn’t want people to look at him for his possessions or looks; he just wanted people to notice his teachings. Socrates inspires me to be determined and to look deeper into questions. I think that Socratic Seminars will be a great learning tool for our class. A Socratic Seminar is an organized debate that allows everyone to voice their opinions without intense conflict. I think that this will be good for our class because I like to hear what other classmates think about passages, and stories that we read in class. I think that this will be good because we will be able to form new opinions based on our classmate’s thoughts and feedback. These Seminars are also good because there really isn’t “right” answer, so we can get into deep discussions without worrying about what we say is right or wrong. For example, our values essay that we have been writing feature things that we value in our lives. Some things that I value in my life, others may not. So if we reviewed our essays in a Socratic Seminar, we could go on for hours about our opinions of our different values. I am looking forward to participating in these Socratic Seminars....

...Seminar Report Security Issues in MANETs Abhishek Seth 04329001 November12 ,2004 Abstract Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) has become an exciting and important technology in recent years because of the rapid proliferation of wireless devices. A mobile adhoc network consists of mobile nodes that can move freely in an open environment. Communicating nodes in a Mobile Adhoc Network usually seek the help of other intermediate nodes to establish communication channels. In such an environment, malicious intermediate nodes can be a threat to the security of conversation between mobile nodes. The security experience from the Wired Network world is of little use in Wireless Mobile Ad hoc networks, due to some basic differences between the two Networks. Therefore, some novel solutions are required to make Mobile Adhoc Network secure. problems of secuirity in MANETs. Further sections deals with some of the solutions to these problems. Finally Section 10 concludes this article. 2 2.1 Mobile Adhoc Networks Introduction 1 Introduction Mobile Adhoc Network (MANET) is a collection of independent mobile nodes that can communicate to each other via radio waves. The mobile nodes that are in radio range of each other can directly communicate, whereas others needs the aid of intermediate nodes to route their packets. Hiv Seminar

...After attending the seminar on HIV in the Grand Ball Room tonight, I learned some new things about HIV that I did not know. The speakers did an awesome job explaining HIV and how it is not a death sentence, but rather just an illness/disease that can be treated and not cured. They spoke about once you contract the disease that you need to go and be treated as soon as possible to help increase your life expectancy. The only way that HIV is a death sentence is when it is left untreated. They told stories about some of the clients that have come in and was tested, names were left out, and the results of the test. The seventeen year old boy is very lucky and hopefully learned what could of happened so he can help prevent it. After the teenager went up north and had some unsafe fun with another male partner about ten years older than he was the boy is very luck not to of contracted the HIV disease because come to find out the partner from up north was positive for it and maybe this scare may have made the boy aware of what could have happened. I learned that African American males say they use condoms, but according to the statistics of HIV, they do not because they are one of the highest rates. If everyone would practice safer sex, we can get the number of new cases down to zero and that has been and will be the theme of the World Aids Day for the next couple of years. Relationships are not monogamous anymore due to partners heating on each other and giving STD’s and STI’s to......

...Darrellynn Tapp HS210-MOM Unit 9 Seminar option 2 K. Drennen Kaplan University What are some effective ways to improve employee morale? When improving employee morale it first starts with the employee. Recognizing the value of your employee is very important. You must know that they are just as important as you are. They can be replaced but then you are dealing with the cost of advertising and pulling in someone new. Letting the employee know that they are appreciated. Just a simple few words such as thanks or a job well done will help increase the morale among employees. Giving out perks, sponser social events, have special lunches as well as cash bonuses, even pinics for the employees and their families. Having a great work environment can improve employee morale. A dull office setting lacking light and color can cause depression and the lack of motivation. Putting some spark into the office can lighten up employees spirit. Make sure the values and ethics of the company are of those employees can take pride in. Most employees in the work force want to work for a company they can trust and believe in. Socratic Seminar

...Socratic Seminar Reflection Before the seminar, I liked the text The Scariest Thing I Know. I liked it since the text was descriptive and interesting to read, I also thought that there was a lot of hidden metaphor in the story which was interesting to decipher. My thoughts immediately after reading the text were that Kid Death was really a metaphor for Nick who had always hid behind a mask to appear frightening and cool but once you “took off his mask.” He was just another Geek like Kid Death. I also thought that the Angel must also be a metaphor for something, and I realized that it was a metaphor for the angel that had saved Nick. I thought that Kid Death and the Angel bundled together represented what we perceive as the “Devil and Angel on our shoulders.” The Devil is Kid Death and the angel being the angel. This showed nicks inner battle to either remain behind a mask and be cool like Kid Death and make Bad things happen. Or be good like the angel and not be so cool but still be good, in the end he chose the path of the Angel and this changed his life since he started being good and not always acting tough since he knew what happens if he does. Before the seminar, I had a pretty clear idea of what the subject of the story was. I remembered the general area of the subject of the story was to constantly travel the good path in life. In the scene near the end of the text where Nick was “frozen in time” and was looking at the angel saving his brother. He could......

...Running head: SEMINAR ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT – UNIT 1 Seminar Alternative Assignment – Unit 1 Kaplan University MT302: Organizational Behavior SEMINAR ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT – UNIT 1 1 What do managers do? “Managers get things done through other people,” (Robbins & Judge, pg. 5). This might seem like an extremely simple definition of a manager’s responsibilities, but it is the truth. There are many methods and ways in which a manager can develop their administrative and people skills. By using systematic study, utilizing the POLC and organizational behavior (OB) models, defining management roles, understanding OB challenges and opportunities, and assessing management skills and managerial activities, a manager can empower and motivate their employees, stimulate innovation, and improve customer service, while creating a healthy work environment. What is organizational behavior? Organizational Behavior is a “field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness.” In other words, it is “the study of what people do in an organization and how their behavior affects the organization’s performance,” (Robbins & Judge, pg. 10). There are different tools that managers can use to better achieve their goals. One of these tools is called the POLC model. The POLC model consists......

Seminar

...Seminar is a play by Theresa Rebeck that premiered on Broadway in 2011. It follows four aspiring writers who pay for a supposed great writer – Leonard – to come and critique their writing weekly. Each writer is their own personality. There is the rich, uppity, nerd-type (Kate), the quieter, reserved, and talented one (Martin), the ditzy, manipulative, and sexy one (Izzy), and the extravagant, smart, and connected one (Douglas). Leonard is depicted as brash, rude, cruel, and unpardonable. The story goes on to where Martin and Leonard connect and see their similarities and work together to better themselves. A theme that immediately jumps at you is conflict. Throughout the play, there is conflict every other conversation. High tension exists between most characters, especially between those of different sexes. Examples are Kate and Leonard throughout most of the play and Martin and Douglas (though one-sided) in scene one, two, and so on. Another theme that is prevalent is the idea that sex sells and that sex will get you everywhere you want to be. This is shown when Izzy writes a story that Leonard deems sexy, and they proceed to pursue a sexual relationship. It could also be interpreted that sexism could be a theme when sex is not available. When Kate submits a story, being defined as a “prude,” Leonard is bored before ending the first sentence, and is bored with her immediately every time following. That is, until she submits something under the guise of a transvestite...
