Problem Solution: Riordan Manufacturing
Employee motivation is an issue that does not discriminate (UoP, 2008). “Motivation is the willingness to exert effort in a particular way” (Dreher & Dougherty, 2001, p.28). Two theories can be reviewed when examining motivation. The first is expectancy theory. Expectancy theory holds that people are motivated to behave in ways that produce desired combinations of expected outcomes (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2004). Vroom’s expectancy theory is a mathematical model that looks at motivation. Employee motivation is influenced by expectation. If I get a raise at the end of the year for all my hard work I will work harder next year. If I work hard and don’t get a raise then my effort level will decrease. Porter & Lawler’s extension expectancy model identified people’s valences and expectancies and how effort connected to performance. “Valence refers to the positive or negative value people place on outcomes’ (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2004, p. 300). This theory showed that job satisfaction was directly linked with how employees perceived their reward. Employees will alter their mind-sets only if they see the point of the change and agree with it – at least enough to give it a try (Lawson & Price, 2003).
The second theory is equity theory. “Equity theory is a model that explains how people strive for fairness and justice in social exchanges or give-and-take relationships” (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2004, p. 290). Adam’s equity theory of motivation looks at inputs and outcomes of employee-employer exchange. Employees expect a return action for their input effort. This return could be rewards and training.

...Description Riordan Manufacturing Company has four locations in Albany, Georgia, Pontiac, Michigan, Hangzhou, China, and San Jose, each with unique operation needs at each location. Procedures are similar throughout the company but are executed differently. The inventory management and control is separated into three separate areas: Raw Materials Receiving; Manufacturing and Inventory; and Final Product Shipping. (Apollo Group, 2005-2008). Each of the four plants has a designated receiving area where raw materials are received. The shipments are then compared to a weekly scheduled order report as the shipments come in. When the orders are received they are entered into the inventory system. The staff is responsible for completing inventory usage reports which are entered into the inventory systems as raw materials are being used. The staff member then enters the manufactured products into the inventory systems as those items are being produced. Consumers can submit a sales order form, which is entered into the Customer Shipping and Billing System; this will then create an order shipping document. The inventory clerks can then update the inventory system based on the shipping documents. (Apollo Group, 2005-2008). This may seem to be an effective way of managing a company and its inventory but there is a large room for error and improvement. A large part of the processes is done manually between the inventory systems and the customer shipping and billing system....

...thorough review of the Operations Department of Riordan Manufacturing, we have uncovered a few areas that would benefit from the addition of a robust business system to manage some of its functions. The first issue is a process that all four plants have in place for the management of receiving raw materials, tracking products during manufacturing, and accounting for the finished good inventories. During each of these phases, all of the data acquired to track the inventory is delivered or gathered through the use of various documents that are manually reviewed and input into a database by an inventory clerk. Not only is this process time consuming and inefficient, but it introduces the likelihood of human error into several junctures of its completion. Another issue that we have uncovered has to do with supply chain management. Several of the plants have experienced some difficulty in managing its inventory and ensuring on time delivery to its customers. In order to operate more efficiently, Riordan has asked its customers to forecast its yearly requirements so that adequate quantities of supplies/products are available for shipment. What has been occurring though is that some customers make random orders throughout the year in addition to their yearly contract. This practice makes it difficult to estimate exact material requirements because the orders are received randomly and for varying quantities. Consequently, Riordan has been keeping a safety stock of its......
