After a period of relative stability, the gasoline prices are rising steadily. The average retail price of gasoline is $2.55 a gallon, but some stations are charging more than $3 a gallon. Why have gasoline prices risen so high in the recent years?

High gas prices are initiated by high crude oil prices. Like most things we purchase, both gas and oil prices are affected by supply and global demand.

According to Collinge and Ayers (2004), supply and demand analysis captures the essential role of competition in the free marketplace. Demand is more than merely wanting a good or service. Demand is a relationship between price and quantity. By the law of demand, “market demand curve slopes downward, indicating an inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.” They go on to say, “like demand, supply is also a relationship between price and quantity. Supply shows the quantity supplied for each possible price. Unlike the demand curve, market supply curve slope upward, reflecting the law of supply. Thus, price and quantity supplied are directly related.” For simplicity, when supply and demand meet in the marketplace, a price is created (Collinge and Ayers, p. 64) and the supply of crude oil shifts and the quantity adjust to new market equilibrium resulting in no tendency for either price or quantity to change (Collinge & Ayers, p. 426).

In my view, the world is not producing the amount of oil demanded which is why gasoline prices are so high and gas station owners setting their own prices based on how much their competitor’s is charging. In response, the ones at the pump paying the price illustrate the invisible hand at work.

Finally, I conclude with a quote by Graffito, an Author, who said, “Let us be realistic and demand the impossible.”

Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks Analysis

...Foster the People – Pumped up Kicks I have chosen “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People. I have chosen this song because I think it is good, it has a story to tell and that is the thing that makes it so fantastic. I have noticed that many songs do not have a story and to be honest I think those kind of songs are pointless. Why make a song if it doesn’t have a message, something that will make you think about you as person or just think about something. The song is about a boy called Robert. He is an allusion to a mass murderer. The name is a metaphor for any kid with an anger issue. His dad is a violent and abusive because he has a gun in his closet. Robert’s Mom is not mentioned in the song and she is probably dead. Robert is a lonely kid, he is an outcast, he doesn’t wear the right clothes, he doesn’t say the right things and he doesn’t fit in between his classmates. He is a bad boy because he has a “rolled cigarette” and he actually is like a cowboy with his’ cigarette and his’ “six-shooter gun”. The kids with the pumped up kicks are those whose lives are all together and “they better run cause he’s got a gun”. He is envious of them and he hates his dad for not giving him the chance to live the sweet life. In the last verse of the song it says: “Daddy works a long day He'll be coming home late … …And he's bringing me a surprise” (Wonder what......

...DORINGO, Ma. Rochelle. C. / Regular / Non-Graduating Class Placement #16 12-006-124 ECET-2C Reflection paper March 21, 2014 March 21, 2014 Professor Darius Daniel Villanueva It is very significant and important for us to gauge or determine how much, us, students have learned after a psychology class. It enables us to gain knowledge that can be applied in the future, giving us more opportunities in succeeding our goals. This learning had an impact in my life, making me more of a responsible one. Comparing my knowledge before and after, my knowledge before is that I have very limited information in my mind like I don't have enough information in order to cope up with the waves of lessons our instructor about to tackle. It's like guessing in an "On-the-spot exam", not having any specific questions in mind to guide our learning though our instructor is preparing learning opportunities. While my knowledge after class, as Instructor guided the process with feedback and mini-lectures we continue applying our knowledge skills after clarification and feedback. We are able to understand and gain ideas in class and on later events these gained ideas will be our piece of information in guiding actions. I also learned a variety of writing elements such as written reports, reflection papers, news sharing and principles to guide my future writing. I learned how to better edit, read, and compose documents. All exercises were useful and helped highlight key......

...companies such as Federal Express and new technological advancements it sparked an opportunity for a much needed change. United Parcel Services saw what was happening and decided to take a step in a new direction. In 1994, UPS announced the major changes it would undergo, which turned into a company-wide initiative to improve its total quality management system. From this, the corporate managers began to seek out the differences between its original management structure and the new management structure. One major characteristic of UPS being a company-wide goal is customer satisfaction achieved through eighteen quality initiatives. This was not an easy change and the transition down the "Road to Quality" proved to be successful at the completion. “UPS has been ranked No. 1 in its industry in 27 of the 31 ‘Most Admired’ surveys conducted by FORTUNE, and was also rated among the best in the world as a long-term investment value and for its innovativeness, employee talent, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, and quality of products and services.” (Russia) The forces that drove the company into success and continuous improvement were simply the powers of Total Quality Management. ...S.A. some of the sentences like “We cured polio and helped eradicate smallpox, we helped end apartheid.” These kind of sentences provokes one true citizen’s patriotism and also it inspires the readers. This adds the paragraph a little bit of interest and a lot of appeal. He also tries to persuade the readers to his will and try to acquire political support. Thirdly, highway uses the descriptive and imagery style of writing this technique imprints on the reader’s mind, paints the description as an image. But Gore’s style is more of formal and repetitive, his style in this essay is part scientific by stating proofs. For example in the reading “The moment of truth ,” the author gives many statistical data like the Tibetan mountain supplies up to half of the drinking water for the 40% population of the world also another is 70% of the planet’s surface is covered by ocean . He is also repetitive because he tries imprint his point on the reader’s mind by restating time and again. For instance he accuses George.W.bush’s mistakes repetitively so that the readers can get his point. But Thomson highway’s essay is very imagery. His vocabularies are very commanding and mood altering. His use of vocabulary changes reader’s mind not only visually but also emotionally. Also his narration was realistic too since he was born and raised in Brochet, Manitoba. (1) Coming to conclusion which was eventually and inevitably hard. But still both the authors have clearly written an effective and......

Bust Up

...Bust up Essay One of the most important themes in the history of research on organisational behaviour has been the study of employee’s motivation and responses to job dissatisfaction. In recent times, employee nurse Wendy was virtually assured that she would be promoted to manager nurse, but instead the selection panel decided after interviews that Tanya was the more suitable candidate. As a result, the frustration and pessimistic emotional state of Wendy was clearly shown by means of the outburst response that left Tanya in shock and unsure on how to manage Wendy’s situation. The focus of this essay will be to explore the job dissatisfaction of Wendy and to further predict Wendy’s future actions and recommend strategies that Tanya could use. Proceeding these recommendations, the usefulness of the four-drive theory and equity theory will be assessed in order to keep employees motivated and deal with Wendy’s behaviour. The Exit-Voice-Loyalty-Neglect (EVLN) model is an important framework used to describe employee responses to job dissatisfaction in one of four ways: by exiting, speaking out about it, loyalty, or job neglect. Based on these ideas of the EVLN model, Wendy has allowed conditions to worsen by enforcing the ‘neglect’ approach when she decided to take time off work. In addition, she had unsuccessfully attempted to voice her level of job dissatisfaction to any of the staff until the recent outburst that occurred at Tanya’s office doorway. According to Lee and......

...Window on Technology: UPS Competes Globally with Information Technology United Parcel Service (UPS), the world’s largest air and ground package-distribution company, started out in 1907 in a closet-sized basement office. Jim Casey and Claude Ryan—two teenagers from Seattle with two bicycles and one phone—promised the “best service and lowest rates.” UPS has used this formula successfully for more than 90 years and is now the world’s largest ground and air package-distribution company. Today UPS delivers more than 13.6 million parcels and documents each day in the United States and more than 200 other countries and territories. The firm has been able to maintain leadership in small-package delivery services despite stiff competition from FedEx and AirBorne Express by investing heavily advanced information technology. During the past decade, UPS has poured billions of dollars into technology and systems to boost customer service while keeping costs low and streamlining its overall operations. Using a handheld computer called a Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD), a UPS driver can automatically capture customer’s signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-card information. The driver then places the DIAD into the UPS truck’s vehicle adapter, an information-transmitting device that is connected to the cellular telephone network. Package tracking information is then transmitted to UPS’s main computers in Mahwah, New Jersey, and Alpharetta, Georgia.......

...All the way to the top: Tom Brady Ubaldo Trevizo English 104 Janett Johnson November 27, 2013 Abstract The research topic I did is how Tom Brady made it to the top. Tom Brady has been an inspirational figure. What has he done in his life? Truly, his background has made him who he is. The things that Tom Brady has done have shaped him as well made him gain a career. These reasons have shaped him from his choices to his failure. Tom Brady is known to be one of the greatest quarterbacks in the National Football League which we know as NFL. Tom Brady, however, didn’t get this way just by taking the easy road. His journey hasn’t been a walk in the park. I found out a lot of new things about this person that inspire me to never giving up. He truly has changed my life. Talk about an inspirational figure. Tom Brady is one of the greatest Quarterbacks in our time, but he is more than just a player. Tom Brady is also a son, a husband, and a lovely father. A quarterback is the leader of the offense. The quarterback leads his team on the field to score and to win games. A quote that stands out to me that Brady said is, “To often in life, something happens and we blame other people for us not being happy or satisfied or fulfilled. So the point is, we all have choices, and we make the choice to accept people or situations or to not accept situations. (Tom Brady Quotes, n.d.) ...century. Time has changed our world in many ways since then. Has time changed the meaning of beauty? Is there a difference in how the Chinese and Americans see beauty? Do we perceive beauty in different ways than the people in the time of The Good Earth? I conclude that the ideals of beauty have changed since the book was written and that modern American society has taken on new views of what it means to be beautiful. Men and women today can use cosmetics as part of a regular beauty routine to achieve certain beauty standards and to increase confidence. Throughout the last century in America, the very meaning of beauty has changed very often: from the Gibson Girl in the early 1900s to the flappers in the 1920s, from the full-figured pin-up girls of the 1940s and the 1950s to the “heroin chic” waifs of the 1990s, what the western world considered beautiful changed with each decade. When one considers beauty, it is now most likely physical appearance that comes to mind. Hilhorst notes, “The view that physical beauty can be conceived of as a value in its own right is, however, a modern thought.” Hilhorst explains in “Physical Beauty: Only Skin Deep?” that the modern idea of beauty is a product of the 1960s. Before then, personality traits such as trustworthiness and reliability could make a person beautiful. Inner beauty was just as, or possibly more important than physical appearance. (Hilhorst) As time has passed, our perception of beauty has changed with it. “In the......

Growing Up

...tutor, I gave up and just didn’t show up. I spent over $100 dollars on a code for an online math class that I didn’t even go to, and bought textbooks for classes’ full price. That’s another thing I learned the hard way, you have to make sure you really need books in your classes before you buy them, because Jaquin 2 then your wasting money. Brand new textbooks cost a fortune, and you might have a friend that took the same class and save money just by borrowing it. Another factor outside of schoolwork is your food expenses. I still haven’t learned from this, because as of right now I’m typing a paper at Starbucks with my sweet black iced tea and ham and Swiss sandwich that I spent $10 on. When I’m not doing homework at Starbucks, I’m at school doing it in the school library with the Tim Horton’s I bought. A tip for my fellow classmates, bring snacks from home or make a meal plan, don’t waste it on fast food. Or bring water bottles from home and use your travel mugs to your advantage instead of buying coffee at Tim Horton’s. All of those bagels and coffees add up, I end up spending probably $300 on food each month just by binge eating. Another one of my “broke college student issues” is my religion for shopping. Before college, I worked for the sole purpose of shopping. I didn’t even care if they were full price, I would buy it on an impulse. After my first year of wasting money on clothes and realizing I give half of them away, I started signing up for......

Growing Up

...Growing Up Growing up is like a big adventure. You experience good and bad stuff. You discover yourself, find out what you’re good at and what you’re not that good at. Growing up brings a lot of difficult choices. All of these choices will affect your future. For instance I think the most difficult choice you have to make in the early years is finding out what you want to work with or as when you get older. Because what if you don’t choose the right thing? What if you as young didn’t stop playing piano? Because you were forced by your parents, maybe you could have been a brilliant pianist today. What if you choose a linguistic field of study just to see your best friend or girlfriend every day? Even though you were more mathematical. That’s already two “mistakes” you have made, first of all by not having discovered your talents, because you gave up to quickly and second of all because you prioritized your loved ones way higher than your education. To make the right choices you prioritize a lot of great things to get the result you want. I’m not saying that if you choose the wrong things, you’ll never do the things you like or have the life you wanted. Of course there’s a great chance you’ll end up having a perfect life, but it might just not be the life you expected. All these choices can be extremely difficult, and the chance of you being spot on, in every choice you make, is very low. Growing up is a broad concept. My definition of growing up starts when you’re born...

Ups Analisis

More and more teenagers gets hooked up with the abusers who, in the other hand, tries to attract them with a enticing offer to a curious teenager who’s thoughts maybe thinking it would make them cooler than others. At school, after school, on the car ride home, there are many opportunities teenagers know just to get a “spank” of it. And often when being scolded by parents, teens engage to violent acts as they see it through the modern technology and to the people around them.
