Esquivel and Wiener (1997) described conflict as “ a discord that occurs when the goals , interest or values of different individuals or groups are incompatiable with each other in an attempt to achieve their objectives. Lawal (1993) described conflict as the disagreement of organization members or groups over means or ends and an attempt to establish their views in preference to others. Wilson (2002) said those people or organization that is able to manage conflicts strategically are those who has most success in their endeavour. Arbitrators or people holding neutral positions on the matter usually carry out conflict resolution. They may take a different approach depending on the type of conflict or the magnitude of the conflict. To alleviate issues between parties, active or passive conflict resolution is used. Griffin and Goodwin (2013) explained that active conflict resolution consists of accommodation, compromise, collaboration and competition. The study examines how the input variable of task structure (task interdependence) is related to team conflict management style (cooperative versus competitive) and to team performance, and how team identity moderates these relationships. Seventy-seven intact work teams from high-technology companies participated in the study. Results revealed that at high levels of team identity, task interdependence was positively associated with the cooperative style of conflict management, which in turn fostered team performance. Although a negative association was found between competitive style and team performance, this style of team conflict management did not mediate between the interactive effect of task interdependence and team identity on team performance. When project team members interact during the course of completing their tasks and responsibilities, there is always a potential for conflict. In fact, it is virtually impossible for people with diverse background skills and norms to work together; make decisions, and try to meet project goals and objectives without conflict. “Project managers must identify, analyze, and evaluate both positive and negative values of conflict and their effect on performance.” (Dixon).
