Dexter

POL 128 Media Exercise Assignment “Dexter” is an American dark satire that goes against many of the social ideologies of standard American society through presenting a paradoxical perspective of a justified serial killer. In this way, the show reinforces its defiance through the absence of the traditional American family and the lack of trust in the judicial system, all while contradictorily supporting the aspect of fitting in among society.
The series “Dexter” follows a man with a meticulously crafted life. By day, he is a blood splatter pattern analyst for the Miami Metro police department. By night, he takes on an entirely different persona: serial killer. However, he is not your average serial killer. He follows a very strict moral code, taught to him by his late foster father Harry, and only kills other serial killers. Season one, episode one, also known as the pilot episode titled “Dexter”, starts off with Dexter stalking and killing his first victim of the series, where it is learned that his victim had killed three young boys previously. Through a series of flashbacks with his late father Harry, it is discovered that at a young age, Dexter had psychopathic tendencies, which Harry was unable to control. Afterwards, his foster sister, Debra, a vice squad officer, pulls him into her world when a series of hookers are being murdered around Miami. The murders involve the victim being chopped into pieces with all of their blood drained, and Dexter is strangely intrigued. Meanwhile, Dexter's girlfriend, Rita Bennett, a single mother of two whose abusive ex-husband is in jail, suddenly wants to take their relationship to the next level. During one of their dates, he leaves her to view another crime scene nearby, discovering that the…...

Media Studies Assignment 1

...Assignment 1: Media And Society | Semiotic Analysis of Gender in Advertising | For the purpose of this assignment, to conduct a semiotic analysis method an image of Sky’s Multiroom advertisement was chosen. Berger has some time ago stated that Semiotics can be defined as the science of signs. In relation to this advertisement, Semiotics method helps an underlying commercial to get its message across various viewers. The image appeared in Sky’s Skywatch TV listings magazine is interesting in the way it depicts masculinity and femininity by illustrating a solution to a fight over a remote when everyone want to watch television. For surely, we live in male dominant society and going along with Sassure’s methodology of analysing signs, there are various signifiers and signifieds within this advertisement. Michael O’Shaughnessy and Jane Stadler (2008, p. 134) state that a carefully composed image can be broken down into signifiers and signified. An advertisement for Sky Multirom image depicts two separate rooms where two males in one room are watching an intense Rugby match of two teams competing against each other and two females in the other room watching a dramatic or a romantic movie series. According to David LeClaire, men and women often have different priorities and may have different point of view if priorities are the same. For example, many men find it more important to watch Rugby, football or any other sporting event, because it characterises men as more physical...

Social Media Assignment Part B

...Advantages and disadvantages of social media. There are multiple advantages of social media, to name a few advantages; worldwide communities available, multiple interactions with large quantities of people, able to link other websites for advertisement, etc. These are ways to get a lot of boost in your advertisement and an increase in sales. This is due to Facebook or other social media sites being sought after by so many people. It is the ultimate way to communicate these days and allows developers to fully put out their product. There are also disadvantages of this as well, some of the disadvantages of social media include; taking up a lot of time, not able to be as productive due to always updating, if social media or internet were to crash nothing would get accomplished as far as advertisement, possible bad reviews, etc. These are all negative to the developer/advertiser. If the social media network world were to shut down for a day or more there would be nothing being said about the game in this instance that would in turn make it impossible for people to see anything. This would make all the money saved on advertising actually go into advertisement a different way. The best way to advertise is to use an assortment of different ways, that way if one thing fails you always have a backup to still get the info needed to get out there out. Social media is used so much these days it’s only a matter of time before there is a server overload and it has to get shut down for......

Exercise Assignment

...The need for sport and exercise Assignment Q5) A positive externality is an unintended spill over effect from a positive activity to a third party resulting from a transaction which they had no direct involvement. We see reference to positive externalities in the extract as they generate a positive externality from a fitter and healthier population. Q6) My first significant point of comparison is that ‘family’ sports such as walking, swimming and snooker etc. have the highest numbers of figures. However activities that are not beneficial for the family to take part in, have the lowest figures such as weight training which you can only properly do at a certain age and the likes of bowls and badminton. Any age and gender can do walking however hence why walking has the overall highest figures for both men and women. My second significant point of comparison is the highest and the lowest overall figures on the table. The highest figure is the walking activity, the reason for this being that anyone can take part in walking and it requires no money unless you want to get specialised walking equipment. Walking costs no money at all and allows you to explore literally anywhere you want. Males and females can take part in walking as well; this is why there is only a 2 person difference between men and women. The lowest figures are joint between badminton and bowls. The reason for this being that these activities require equipment to play whereas walking for instance, does......

...Unit 8 Homework Unit 8 Assignment 1 DNS is a server based distributed database management system that translates domains host’s names to IP Addresses. It also allows a computer host or a client to use words instead of numbers to request information from a server or a client. You can get words or numbers to get the information from servers. Unit 8 Assignment 2 In Windows NT, when you make a change to the Security Accounts Manager, the change is applied directly to the Primary Domain Controller and is later replicated to each Backup Domain Controller. In an Active Directory multi-master replication environment, each domain controller contains a copy of Active Directory, not just the information for a single domain. When a change is made to Active Directory, the change is applied to whatever domain controller is the closest, and is then replicated to the remaining domain controllers. This prevents a designated Primary Domain Controller from being overburdened. Centralization sums up a primary reason for implementing Active Directory. The Active Directory structure makes it possible for you to achieve truly centralized management of users, regardless of how big the client’s network has become. In Windows NT a domain is a completely independent entity, and while it's possible to create a trust relationship between domains that exist on a common network, the domains are never truly integrated with each other because there is no higher authority that manages the domains. The......

Sweater for Sweatshop Exercise Assignment

...Name: Anon Professor: E. K. Sweatshop Exercise Assignment Part 1: By applying the Universal Intellectual Standards, four errors or violations have been identified in the essay “Sweatshirts from Sweatshops”. The information contained in this essay was apparently gathered from an investigation report conducted by the WorldWeave Foundation, of course mentioned only by the writer, more on this later. One of the first thing I noticed as a violation is the use of emotional manipulation. Countless times, the author would tried to appeals to the reader’s emotional side by putting focuses mainly on the story of the little girl and not providing any supports for the argument with any sort of statistics, interviews, or documents. For instance, the writer will mention how the little girl would “working hour after hour” while “trying not to collapse from the heat”. First of all the writer is just working under the assumption that the girl do work a lot of hours (we won’t even go into how much hour is too much) and that the heat is unbearable. Unless there are any actually interviews or documentations stating that the author had witnessed the condition of the workplace, these statements are all irrelevant. Coming back to how the information was used from a report done by the “WorldWeave Foundation”, that will us to the second violation. This is more of an accuracy error as the many facts stated in this essay are untraceable. There no citations of online articles or report websites......

Culture and Media Assignment

...Culture & Media Assignment Comm-1050/TEACHERS NAME INTRODUCTION Media has changed an incredible amount over decades and even every year. The media will continue to grow unless people stop using it, which let’s be honest, will never happen. In my life I have seen how the media has grown, changed, and progressed. There were parts of the media that really drew me in as if I was a part of it while other parts did not have any interest on me. At times there were even some median that I did not even know was out there. Culture and media had significant changes from when I was in Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, High School, and now College. What I found interesting as I looked back was not only did the culture and the media change, but what interested me and the media that caught my attention also changed. PRESCHOOL & ELEMENTARY MEDIA In my preschool years I don’t recall the culture and the media having an influence on me, I don’t even recall the media at all. The media to me was my family and my friends. Going to school and putting on school plays and productions. Sports were the biggest culture and media that was affecting me during this time. Whenever Halloween came around if I wasn’t dressed as a professional dirt bike rider or as a professional baseball player then I wasn’t a “cool” kid. I did believe that if I dressed the part then that portrayed who I actually was or could be. When elementary came my feelings changed a bit, but not much. During......

Assignment 2 Current and Media Affairs

...Identify the methods used in the regulation and self-regulation of the media in the UK Regulation is a compulsory part of modern media. It sets clear instructions on the content and conduct of things that are being shown to the general public. Self-regulation is when the media are independent from the state in that they regulate their own material, and decide what viewers should see and not see. How is the media regulated? Here in the UK, the government has absolutely no power over what the media publish. From 1990 to 2014, media was regulated by the Press Complaints Commission, which was replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation. These bodies are entirely independent from the government. This is one of the messages on the homepage of the IPSO: "IPSO is committed to working with the newspaper and magazine industry to maintain and enhance the freedom and authority of the press through effective, independent regulation." When an independent organisation regulates the media, bias is not so much of an issue as it would be otherwise. Standards are set by the regulating body, and media outlets have the obligation as part of the media, to cooperate and follow them. When a company breaches the standards that have been set, the IPSO will conduct it's own independent investigation into whether the allegation is true. The IPSO works on democracy; the majority of newspapers and other media outlets support it, so therefore there is no resistance to it's......

Week 1 Assignment-Media and Culture Theory

...In the world today the media has a major impact on individuals who are involved in it. Rather it be through the radio, television, or the internet the majority of individuals have access to this and are susceptible to the impact that it has. There are many theories that define the relations between individuals and the impact that media has. One theory out there is based off of a learning theory. This theory is the Social Cognitive Theory, and it revolves around the “functions and processes of observational learning. By observing others’ behaviors, including those of media figures, one may develop rules to guide one’s own subsequent actions prompted to engage in previously learned behavior” (Nabi & Oliver 2010). Media directly influences individuals simply by the viewers watching or listening to the media and picking up the behavior of that media.  According to Bandura (1986, 2002), “observational learning is guided by four processes. Attention to certain models and their behavior is affected by source and contextual features such as attractiveness, relevance, functional need, and affective valence. Second, retention processes focus on the ability to symbolically represent the behavior observed and its consequences, along with any rehearsal of that sequence. The third is production, which focuses on translating the symbolic representations into action, reproducing the behavior in seemingly appropriate contexts, and correcting for any errors based on the feedback received....
