III. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Medical Terminology: This course covers the basic structure of medical terms, including roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Emphasis will also be placed on the terminology of body systems. Medical terms related to anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical procedures, laboratory tests, and medical abbreviations will be covered. Also, students will learn medical terminology related to specialized areas of medicine such as cancer medicines, nuclear medicines, radiology/radiotherapy, pharmacology, and psychiatry. Prerequisite: BIOL 1080 or higher.

IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Analyze numerous medical terms and have a solid foundation on which to build a larger vocabulary 2. Recognize medical terms and understand the context in which that word will be applied for all human body systems. 3. Build medical terms given the definitions of the term. 4. Accurately pronounce medical terms by reading medical terms and documents in class. 5. Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate medical terminology concepts using both verbal and written forms of communication. 6. Create a professional pamphlet using graphics that conveys information to a layperson. 7. Perform an interview of a health care professional in order to demonstrate the ability to communicate medical terminology at the professional level. 8. A. In-Class Word Analysis: (10 Points) Bring the in-class participation form to each class period to write down and analyze medical terms during and as needed after the class period. This form is found on Blackboard. Date each class session that terms are introduced (you must be present the day of the terms to receive credit – but will be responsible for all terms on exams, i.e. matching with formal definition). The form will be checked at the midterm exam (up to 10 points) and at the final exam (up to 10 points).

B. Class Participation:

If you are not attending, arriving late or leaving early you are not participating!!!!

Quizzes and examinations are administered at the beginning of class. No additional time will be given for late arrival. Once the first student has completed a quiz or examination and left the room, no late arrivals will be permitted to take the quiz or test.

C. RX: Up to 20 Points

Students will research two different commonly prescribed medications. They may seek advice from a pharmacist or physician. The form and grading rubric can be found on Blackboard. This assignment must be uploaded into turnitin.com before the class period. Turn in your RX and matching report with explanations at the beginning of the class period. Students will write down the different medications and indications during the RX class session. Terminology from this assignment may be used on the midterm exam

D. Chapter Quizzes: (Up to 330 points) Students will take a fill-in-the-blank 30-point chapter quiz covering the material from the assigned chapter readings. The quizzes come from the “Word Parts Focus” sections. Quizzes will be given out the first minute of class. Arrive on time to use all 10 minutes of quiz time allocated. There are no make-ups for missed quizzes.

E. Midterm Examination: (Up to 150 points) Students will take a 2-hour, 150-point midterm exam that will cover the material from lectures and textbook chapters 1-8. The exam will be objective and include subjective writing and listening skills including terms introduced during class activities including table analysis. The midterm exam will take place according to the College Exam Schedule.

F. Group Assignment: Word Game (Up to 120 points) Teams of up to three students will sign up early in the semester to present a review game to prepare the class for the midterm or final exam. There will be 11 games for the following Chapters: 2 through 16. See Written Assignment Instructions and grading rubric on Blackboard for detailed information

Note: The following is a separate part of the game assignment for each gamester. 1. Each student gamester will use a database to find an abstract from a peer-reviewed medical journal (e.g., JAMA) related to any pathology, diagnosis, or treatment found in the textbook chapter(s). A total of 5 different medical terms must be analyzed for prefix, combining form, and suffix. The abstracts must be from current articles (2011-2013) and Wikipedia, newspaper, and other compendia are not acceptable.

2. Underline all the different medical terms in each abstract (minimally 5). Next highlight five of those underlined terms that you will analyze using the Analysis Table. Analyze each term for its components (prefixes, combining forms/root, and suffixes) with all parts also defined into the Gamester table of analysis. Upload your analysis table along with your game critique into turnitin.com as instructed after you have presented your game in class. Failure to upload will result in the forfeit of all critique points. Use APA handbook to cite the article.

3. Before presenting their game, the team of gamesters will turn in a packet with their title page, game rules and questions and answers. AND each individual gamester will also turn in their abstract assignment consisting of a title page, one underlined and highlighted abstract. You will pronounce one term from each abstract at the beginning of your game. The audience and gamesters should write these terms down as they may appear on the midterm or final exam.

4. After the game is presented in class, one gamester will upload the game packet material into turnitin.com and all gamesters will upload their individual tables of analysis with citations along with a detailed critique of each partner as well as themselves. At the end of each critique the gamester will score a grade for each individual including themselves. Print out the turnitin.com report, explain all matches and turn it in at the next class meeting (penalty points will be deducted if turned in late).

G. Written Assignment #1: Interview (Up to 110 Points) See Written Assignment Instructions & Grading Rubric on Blackboard for detailed information. No late interviews will be accepted. Interviews must be uploaded into turnitin.com & Blackboard by the due date and time. In the discussion section of Blackboard, each student must post a response to at least two other students’ interview by the deadline. All students must reply to any post to their interview. During the Interview Class Session, all students will pronounce one medical term they learned from their interview. All students will write down the medical terminology pronounced by each student in class that day. These terms may be tested on the final examination.

H. Written Assignment #2: Professional Brochure (Up to 110 points) See Written Assignment Instructions Handout on Blackboard for detailed information. No late brochures will be accepted. Pamphlet Panels (in MS Word) must be uploaded into turnitin.com & Blackboard by the due date and time. In the discussion section of Blackboard, each student must post a response to at least two other students’ pamphlet panels by the deadline and reply to any posts to their pamphlet panels. During the Pamphlet Class Session, all students will pronounce one medical term they used in their pamphlet. All students will write down the medical terminology pronounced by each student in class that day. These terms may be tested on the final examination.

I. Final Comprehensive Examination: (Up to 150 points) Students will take a 2-hour, 150-point final comprehensive exam that will stress the lecture material after the midterm and textbook chapters 9-17. The exam will be objective and may include subjective writing and listening skills including terms introduced during class activities including table analysis. The final exam will take place according to the College Exam Schedule.

Class will start promptly according to the schedule on course wizard. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared. All cell phones and beepers are to be turned off. DO NOT TEXT IN CLASS! There will be a sign-in sheet at each of the class sessions. A student must sign in and attend the entire class in order to receive credit for any work due or done in class that day! All assignments, quizzes, and exams are due or begin at the start of the scheduled class session. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire any missed material or announcements from a fellow student or to make an appointment with me.

There will be no make-ups allowed or late work accepted, with the exception of bona-fide documented excuses that specify that the student was physically or mentally unable to be in class on a specific date and it must also specify the date when the student is able to return to campus. The procedure to turn in work late or make-up a missed assignment requires the student to contact me as soon as possible to make arrangements. The student is expected to turn in any assignment or to take a make-up as soon as they return to campus or face a reduction in points. Make up exams that are allowed will cover the same material but may be in a different format such as essay. Do NOT wait until the next class session you attend to request any make up or to turn in late assignments. Work conflicts and transportation difficulties are not considered valid excuses. Student athletes must provide their anticipated conflict dates and also have their coach verify any NSU athletic event that conflicts with the class schedule.

Turnitin.com & BlackBoard: All student work must be turned in at the beginning of the class period when it is due. All individually written work by the student must be uploaded into turnitin.com by the assigned deadline for all of the article abstracts, the interview, the clinical trial, and the pamphlet assignments. After submission, you must check your matching report on line and explain any matching percentage for the Portfolios and Written Assignments. You must keep quotations to less than 10%. You must print out your matching report and explain all matches! Turn in the explained report with the assignment. Excessively high matches may result in point deductions and possible sanctions. At the beginning of this semester you will be given information on how to set up your specific account at turnitin.com. Note: Any work not submitted to turnitin.com will be given a 0 grade. All handouts will be available on BlackBoard. Students will also be uploading their Interview and Pamphlet Assignments into the Discussion section of BlackBoard and will post to two different student interviews and pamphlets and respond to all students who post to them.

Replacement-credit: Will be very limited in scope and is not intended as a substitute for poor performance on required assignments and exams. Students are expected to arrive on time. All cell phones and music players are to be turned off. Nonparticipation, texting in class, tardiness, leaving early and unexcused absenteeism will result in the loss of replacement XC points.

K. Post-Game Critiques: Peer game grading will be used this semester as an extra-credit assignment except for the gamesters (Mandatory assignment). Students will use the critique form found on Blackboard for critiquing their fellow students for the student created games (Chapters 4 -16). Note: all postgame critiques must be uploaded into turnitin.com within 24 hours following the activity. Failure to upload will result in the forfeit of any XC point (Note: Gamesters are required to upload a critique as part of their Group Assignment Grade. See the grading rubric and instructions for this assignment). Bonus points will be awarded for thoroughness of thought (1 to 2 points).

On a limited first-come basis, students may arrange to bring a guest speaker to class (physician, nurse, therapist, pharmacist, etc.) who will present information directly related to their use of medical terminology in their practice for up to 10XC points. The student will introduce the guest. Guests will have 15 minutes of class time. All guests must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. No guests are allowed on testing or major assignment dates.

Tips for a successful learning experience: This course will require significant time outside of class studying the language of medicine. It is vital that you develop excellent organizational and studying skills to optimize your time. Also, establishing a study group from the beginning of the semester will enhance your learning and should prove to be a valuable resource throughout the course.

It is highly recommended that all students create flash cards, cognitive maps, and outlines for each chapter. Make use of all resources (i.e. chapter exercises). Use the Internet, medical and online libraries, etc… to illuminate the material. Remember: medical terminology is a disciplined, detailed, and challenging course that will require many hours per week outside of class. This requires great planning, organizing, motivational skills, and especially – responsibility.

Final thought; remember that this material will be the foundation that you will use daily in your chosen health career. The more effort you place into the course early on, the easier and more enjoyable it will become AND the greater your retention will be!
