Biomedical scientists work in healthcare and carry out a range of laboratory tests and techniques on tissue samples and fluids to help clinicians diagnose diseases. They also evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

Their work is extremely important for many hospital departments and the functions they carry out are wide ranging. For example, they may work on medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, AIDS, malaria, food poisoning or anaemia, or carry out tests for emergency blood transfusions or to see if someone has had a heart attack.

Biomedical scientists can work in three areas: infection sciences; blood sciences; and cellular sciences.

Infection sciences include:
•medical microbiology - identification of micro-organisms causing disease and their antibiotic treatment;
•virology - identification of viruses, associated diseases and monitoring the effectiveness of vaccines.

Blood sciences include:
•clinical chemistry - analysis of body fluids and toxicology studies;
•transfusion science - determination of donor/recipient blood compatibility, ensuring blood banks are sufficient;
•haematology - form and functions of blood and related diseases;
•immunology - understanding the immune system and its role in combating disease.

Cellular sciences include:
•histopathology - microscopic examination of diseased tissue samples;
•cytology - best known for cervical smear screening, but also covers other cellular analysis;
•reproductive sciences - analysis of samples to detect fertility…...

...One of the major shortcomings of science supposedly is a lack of communication between scientists and the general public. Many argue that too often, science is only presented in written academic journals that are not so easily obtained by the general public. This is discussed on a daily basis and was argued in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as well as in on-going debate about other scientific theories and ideas. However, people fail to realize a few things. One of the major things is that, in terms of an earthquake or tsunami, you simply cannot predict anything like that. You cannot blame scientists for not being able to predict an earthquake like a meteorologist can predict weather events. Scientists can study things like seismic activity and they can make assumptions as to what may happen should an earthquake of a high magnitude hit and cause something catastrophic like a tsunami. Yet, some fail to realize that some safety measures were taken, and even inspectors that visited the Fukushima Nuclear power plant asked Japanese authorities to increase safety measures further. According to the National Endowment for the Arts’ “To Read or Not to Read” report [6], Americans and especially younger Americans read less and they read less well. Indeed, reading less correlates to reading less well, and the habit of daily reading correlates with better reading skills and higher academic achievement. Reading correlates with almost every measurement of positive personal and social behavior surveyed, from scholarship and job success to voting and playing sports.    But only 54% of 9-year-olds read almost every day for fun, a number that drops to 22% by age 17–down from 31% in 1984. From 1992 to 2005, the percentage of 12th graders reading at or above the proficient level dropped from the not-very-promising 40% to 35%. Moreover, the reading gap is widening by gender. For boys in the 12th grade, average reading scores now trail those of girls by 13 points as compared to 10 points earlier. Moreover, adult reading at a level considered proficient has decreased from a low 15% in 1992 to a lower 13% in 2003. We will never know because that is the past but it was a necessary cause to help end that deadly war. Without this act by the U.S., World War II might not have ended for another year. Usage of Science Hiroshima was based around science. It was the story of the great atomic bomb and all of its radioactive side effects. So yes! Of course this book has to do with science. I found science throughout this book. The radiation poisoning caused by the atomic bomb exploding is just an example of science. This work of non-fiction was built around science. It tells of the not only of the bomb itself but also the side effects of it and how it affected and killed hundreds of thousands of people. This story mostly told the story of how the survivors survived the ordeals of the attack and how they suffered and conquered. Personal Reflections I really liked this story. It was a n outstanding novel and Hersey did a great job in describing the accounts accurately of what happened to these people. It told me a lot about the hardships that these people had to go through because of the attack on Hiroshima. I liked the aft that this story did actually occur and wasn’t just a fictitious story made up by one’s own mind. Even the nations like India, Japan and Brazil who are criticizing the Council for lack of representativity are doing so because they want to get on to it: they think the idea as such of having a limited group of nations with such special powers is great.
