Ice Movement

...Ice movement Cold based glaciers (POLAR) occur in the high Latitudes where the temperature of the snow fall is far below zero degrees and the ice of the glacier remains at below zero throughout the year. These glaciers therefore stay frozen to the bedrock all year and there fore there is little ice movement and therefore little erosion. Greenland and the Antarctic have cold based glaciers. Warm based glaciers or temperate glaciers have water present throughout the ice mass and this water acts as a lubricant. This may be for a period of the year or all year, and allows for much greater rates of movement and thus more erosion. These glaciers are often found in mountain glaciers at lower latitudes but higher altitudes than polar glaciers. Cold based glaciers move mainly by internal deformation. These glaciers are frozen to the bed and therefore only move 1-2cm a day. The ice crystals within the glacier orientate themselves in the direction of ice movement. This allows ice crystals to slide past one another. Where the ice movement is fast enough crevasses may develop. Temperate glaciers move mainly through BASAL SLIPPAGE. If the glacier moves, this can raise the temperature of the base ice through pressure and friction. The basal ice can then melt, and this water helps to allow the ice to slip more easily over its bed. This could move at 2-3m per day and pick up material with which it can use to erode its bed. This is related to regelation, which is the phenomenon of......

Ice Cream

...evaluated the ice cream industry from a Porter’s Five Forces perspective to determine the attractiveness of the market. Next, we observed Amy’s Ice Creams’ strategy through interviews and class concepts to see how Amy’s competes. Then, we assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s strategy to offer recommendations for Amy’s Ice Creams going forward. Production and Sales The biggest activities in the ice cream industry consist of production and sales. In 2011, U.S. manufacturers produced 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream, a 6.5 percent increase from 2009. In addition, U.S. ice cream sellers sold 25.4 billion servings of ice cream and other frozen desserts. This represents a 2.4 percent increase from the previous year, a slight increase after two year of stagnant sales (New Hope 360). There are two channels for ice cream sales. The first channel is food service where customers visit an ice cream parlor and pay a premium for the product. The second channel is retail where customers purchase their favorite brand of ice cream from a retail chain like Wal-Mart.  Food services constitute a larger portion of the two channels accounting for 57 percent of overall ice cream sales (New Hope 360).   Products    The products in the ice cream industry include premium ice creams and novelties.  Premium ice creams include sorbet, sherbet, and fruity flavored ice products packaged by the pint or quart. Novelties are separately packaged ice cream products like ice cream......

Souls on Ice

...Souls on Ice Individuality and commonness are but one of two things. Although, these two are expressed in different ways, so Mark Doty implies in his essay and poem “Souls on Ice”. The essay can be seen as the progression of Doty’s epiphany about himself as a person, which is idealistically described in his poem. Doty begins his essay by recounting a time in a Stop ‘N Shop in which he was star struck by the beauty and luminosity of a stack of mackerels. Metaphors are used to describe the event and are also claimed to be what makes us as an individual person. Upon Doty’s gaze at the mackerels, metaphors served as his thinking which he knew were unique and his very own. Moreover, descriptions formulated about the fishes brought Doty to the realization of what he perceives reflects his own psychic state, but can easily be mistaken for “neutral” thinking. “Soul, heaven” were put in the poem for the sole purpose of yielding depth. These two words engaged Doty to argue whether or not he, or you, could lose oneself “entirely in the universe / of shimmer”. Now, it is important to note that he did not distinguish between each mackerel, but instead saw them as a whole, hence why he questions what it means to be a self. After realizing the poem’s “subject-beneath-the-subject”, it is then he decides what it means to be a self. Doty explains how even though the mackerels were dead; they still seemed to live on through the very essence they gave off as a whole. Thus, stating that the......

Melting Ice Glaciers

...TermPaperWarehouse.com - Free Term Papers, Essays and Research Documents The Research Paper Factory Join Search Browse Saved Papers Home Page » Science Melting of Ice Glaciers In: Science Melting of Ice Glaciers The melting of ice glaciers is considered to be a normal act of nature. The real problem occurs when “the snow replenishing it is less than the melted water.” (Mathias, 2011). This problem is occurring with the majority of glaciers around the world, with the size of the glaciers reducing causing an increase in the sea water levels. The primary culprit for the sudden melting of ice glaciers is the rapid industrialization and the burning of fossil fuels taking place. There are many negative effects on the earth because of the rapid melting of ice glaciers but the most prominent ones are global warming, shortage in fresh water and the rise in sea level. The human population has taken action to try and reduce the severity of these effects, and have been successful in doing so, but they are still very present. Global warming is a concern that is well-known by the majority of our population and a mutual effort of several countries to reduce the overall release of pollution and greenhouse gases was carried out through a contract called the “Kyoto Protocol.” This is one good example of the awareness of the issues that we as a planet are facing, and how we have tackled these severe issues. Glacier melting is on the rise and the......

As Russia’s largest domestic ice cream producer, they had held onto their market leadership for many years. However, increasing competition from foreign companies, along with the emergence of regional producers of ice cream led to Ice-Fili’s market share erosion in the recent years. Porter’s five forces model was the primary method to analyze Ice-Fili’s industry and its competitiveness in the industry. Segmentation analysis was used for further study of the ice cream industry in Russia. The analysis was carried on key variables like distribution channel, buying behavior, geographic locations, and product characteristics. Based on this model, various alternatives were considered. From these alternatives, it was possible to form a recommendation: Ice-Fili will need to focus on the strengthening of its distribution channel through various efforts including marketing and raising of capital while focusing on its long history and brand recognition. Above all, availability of its product to the consumers is the key to Ice-Fili’s success. Porters Five......

Sea Ice Essay

...Sea Ice Explain the trends and why they occur The overall concept of global warming has rapidly influenced the world’s awareness of how our uses of fossil fuels are destroying the natural world. From 1979 to 2000, the sea ice conditions were generally stable. Since then, year by year there has slowly been a decline in Arctic sea ice, most obviously seen from 2008 to present. Year after year scientists are seeing a lower starting measurement of sea ice coverage, though the pattern remains relatively similar, it’s obvious that the amount of sea ice is declining at a rapid rate, nearly half a million square kilometers within just two years. Scientists have also noticed a drastic drop in the thickness of the ice. Since 1972 there has been a consistent decline of about 3% every decade, but a steak of low ice years from 2002 – 2004 brought the decline average to 7.7% per decade. Based on the patterns that we’ve been seeing, it can only be expected that this will continue to decline rapidly as long as the Earth’s temperature continues to rise. So why is this happening? There is still plenty of cold weather that we all have to bare, but if there is so much cold and snow that we experience, why is the Arctic sea ice melting? The answer unfortunately lies in the hands of humanity. Although the current loss of ice seems small, it’s going to make a very quick decline due to something referred to as “albedo”. Albedo is the polar reflectivity, so when the ice melts, we lose this and......

Ice Cream Anyone?

...| Ice Cream Anyone? | | Raquel DeBusk | Raquel DeBusk Ice Cream Anyone??? September 13, 2013 We all remember being small children and running after their ice cream man as he drove down our streets selling his wares. All of the children would run and yell at the top of their little lungs for him to stop, who knew when he’d be back. I now live in a rural community where the ice cream truck is almost nothing but a kid’s fantasy anymore. In this area, if I were to introduce such an amenity it could be very welcome by all (especially the children who don’t get to enjoy such privileges as we did growing up in the big cities). [What exactly makes you believe that an ice cream truck will be very welcome in the rural community where you now live? You might want to mention this here so you can have a more detailed discussion. :)] There are many different types of trucks and services that I could offer. I can offer the sales of ice cream when the business is young and expand to selling more than just ice cream once the business has an established customer base and a need for more options. Not only will I be able to drive around enjoying the summer weather but I will be able to go to fairs, kids’ games (baseball, soccer, etc.) and even to the parks and beaches. The ice cream truck business can be a financially successful business offering to its owners......

Ice Fishing Essay

...the sun shining on the Expedition in the most perfectly, exquisite way. We couldn’t help but smile at each other while admiring its brilliant design. After we finished up loading the equipment, we then headed back inside to eat a warm, filling breakfast. After the hearty meal, we all hopped back into the car and drove to the lake again. When we got to there, it seemed that more snow had fallen overnight for the level of snow had increased dramatically. However, it was not a problem at all for the Expedition to plow gracefully through. After about a five-minute drive around the lake, we spotted a nice area to settle into fishing. The gallant sports-utility vehicle came to a gentle halt and we got out to commence drilling holes into the dense ice. We placed the Aqua View underwater camera into the holes and discovered to our delight that there were many fish present around us. So we proceeded to fish and instantly caught some nicely-sized walleyes and perches. Later in the day, a surprise snow storm fell upon the area so we left the majority of the equipment where they were and went to sit cozily inside of the Expedition, a vehicle with great heating, comfort features, and spacious room. It felt exactly like lounging around in your own living room, complete with crystal clear speakers to flow out entertaining music. Another aspect of the Expedition allure that I found myself then realizing was the quietness of its engine when you sit within its strong frame. The tranquilizing......

"Ice Cream" by Helen Dunmore

...An Essay on “Ice Cream” by Helen Dunmore The term of a dream is a strongly desired goal or purpose, something that fully satisfies a wish. A dream is something that all needs to have. It is a vision. Dreams are our world; they are the inner workings of the mind. Some dreams gives ideas and some help solve problems. To succeed a dream, you have to believe in yourself. Once Theodore Roosevelt said, “believe you can and you are halfway there”. But sometimes believing is not enough. Sometimes everything is fighting against you. Clara, who is the main character in this short story, is battling with a lot of struggles. As a 23-year-old, she already had a tough life. As a 14-year-old “she was as wide and sleek as a whale”, (page 84 line 13-14). Which is not easy for a 14-year-old, where appearance starts to mean a lot and others are judging on the look. Clara always wanted to be a model, so she went from booking agency to booking agency, but she always got told that she weighed too much, (page 84 line 28). The way she describes herself on page 84 lines 12-14, shows that it had affected the way she perceives herself. But on page 84 line 25-27, she believes what the booking agency, they confirms her in the way of thinking about herself. She is now struggling of always looking the best that she can, but the image of the booking agencies judging on the way she looks, will always be a permanent injury, as so are the way she pictures herself. After the many rejections, she got help......

Ice Break

...Essay on: ”Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett Most kids love to spend time with their fathers. Spending time with dad, means going to a restaurant, going out fishing or walking in the woods. For most kids with siblings, it means getting dad’s attention all to themselves for once – no siblings to steal it now, because it’s just them and daddy. But there are those few kids, where spending time with dad, means no other adult to make him seem like a normal dad. To those few, unlucky kids, spending time alone with dad means new bruises on their body and shouting and angry faces – those kids that never wants to be alone with dad. In most of those cases, kids even beg their moms to do something – to never leave them alone with dad, because he is always so mad… but it never seem to make any difference, and ever too often, spending time with dad, ends up in a battered and bruised kid, that’s scarred for life, both mentally and physically. Those kids are going to grow up, never knowing what it’s like to have a loving and caring father, because all they’ve experienced in their life, is one that uses violence to get his way when he gets angry, or one that shouts at them over absolutely nothing. Of course, violence from parents aren’t always coming from the father’s side – we’ve heard of mom’s being just as bad, if not worse, on the news, but violence coming from a father is what’s relevant to us. Because an angry father is what changed the tragedy in “Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett from......

Fire & Ice

...Fire and Ice Will the world ever come to an end? And if so, should it end in fire or in ice? These two core questions are raised while reading Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice”. But just for a moment, if we were to take the physical world out of context and replace it with those who live in it, then maybe there is something more to it. Maybe the physical world will not end in such tragic ways, but perhaps society will. These two powerful elements, fire and ice, that are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum, somehow bring out a thought-provoking process about the deterioration of society. The two elements that Frost incorporates into his poem are very vital to its analysis. Fire can symbolize many things negatively as well as positively. The negative affiliations with fire include chaos, war, ruin, and destruction. Few years prior to the American Revolution, there was a chaotic clashing between American colonists and the British because of heavily imposed taxes, thus, portraying an unorganized and hostile society. Plenty of wars have occurred on this earth because of societies. Ruin and destruction also exemplify the notion of this idea. After the tragic 9/11 incident in the United States, many Americans developed such a hatred for the Muslim people (and vice versa) to the point where racism was deemed acceptable. The actions were responsible in the production of one society against another leaving practically no lee-way for peace. Although these......

Crisis Essay Ice Storms

...Although an ice storm may not seem to have the same type of effects as some other crises may have on the hospitality industry, there are many negative outcomes from them. Ice storms are very dangerous in the fact that you never know when it could turn into one. Weather may be getting weather, even warmer, but if you’ve got rain, especially at the end of the winter season, it could easily turn to ice in a second. All types of storms can have some effect on any type of operation but in particular, those that are non-essential. As stated by the Government of Canada, “freezing rain is tough, clings to everything it touches and is more slippery than snow. A little freezing rain is dangerous, a lot can be catastrophic” (http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/knw/ris/str-eng.aspx#c4). Things such as electrical, heating, plumbing, gas, and any other type of power outlet can be effected by ice storms, especially with them being outside. The next few paragraphs are an explanation into how ice storms can affect a hospitality operation from the greenhouse, up to the actual restaurant itself. As well we personally interviewed Sarah Scott about her experience with an ice storm at Inn On The Twenty. There are several different areas that can be affected by the severe effects of an ice storm. As the rest of this report will show, the effects can spread right from the farmers to the restaurant/hotel and even directly to the guest at such locations. The primary focus of the interview that will......

Selling Ice Cream

...Example of a Basic Essay Selling Ice Cream Introductory paragraph For many people, the summer months are a time for relaxed living and freedom from care. But as a softice-cream concessionaire on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, I have never been able to share this attitude. I have, in fact, found that my job of selling ice cream during the summer can be a most trying and exasperating means of making a living. One must contend with government forms, the hired help, and most of all, the weather. Motivator Thesis statement mentioning three areas for discussion. Topic sentence The first big headache is the growing amount of forms and regulations with which the small businessman is swamped. There are census forms on materials consumed for the U.S. Agricultural Census Department, milk forms for the state labor board, sales tax forms, income tax forms, and dozens more. Every day seems to bring a new and more complicated form to contend with. One summer I recorded and paid a young lady of legal age an hour overtime pay, and I was harassed by a state investigator for permitting the employee to work one hour overtime, due to some silly state rule regarding female employees. Support by example Topic sentence Even more irritating than the government controls is the problem of securing efficient, dependable help. There are the incompetent ones who, even though taught how to use the cash register or to mix the ice cream,......
