Executive Summary:

This written report presents a collection of information about Hydrocarbons and how one could efficaciously distinguish its classification by means of determining its properties through applied tests. The process and skills of analysis that are provided include the familiarization of the important data about Hydrocarbons including its categorizations, structures, reactions and usages followed by the apprehension in detail of its classification by the determination of its physical and chemical properties. The obtained results of data evaluated show that all the end-products were accurate and precise. The written report highlighted the data about Hydrocarbons and the information ascertained such as the macroscopic properties of Hydrocarbons based on distinctive tests.

I. Introduction

Hydrocarbons are the simplest class of organic compounds and are composed solely of hydrogen and carbon. This class can be further divided into two groups: aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. Aliphatic hydrocarbons can be classified based on the structure and bonding of the carbon skeleton into three groups: alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. Alkanes, or saturated hydrocarbons, are compounds that consist entirely of single bonds, so that each carbon atom is connected to four other atoms (either another carbon within the skeletal structure or a hydrogen atom). ...What are Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons? Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of toxic organic compounds. These organic contaminants are often byproducts of the processing of crude oil or incomplete combustion consisting of many aromatic rings joined together. (1) Occurrence of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Foods PAHs tend to be Lipophilic in nature and there occurrence in foods can be linked to contamination by soil, water and/or air or from cooking practices at home such as roasting, grilling smoking etc.(2) High temperatures and exposure to sunlight decreases the concentration in food substances. There are over 500 PAHs but only 15 have been identified that affect foods. Figure 1 shows a list of the fifteen PAHs along with their structures. Kazakhstan holds big hydrocarbon reserves, including potentially the second largest oil reserves in the world (US Energy Information Administration). According to official data from the Ministry of Oil and Gas of Republic of Kazakhstan, confirmed hydrocarbon reserves, both onshore and offshore, are estimated to be 4.8 billion tons or more than 35 billion barrels for 2012. Kazakhstan possesses unique geographical features that lead the country’s oil and gas cluster to be spread throughout the entire country, instead of one specific geographical area. Around 70% of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas reserves, both onshore and offshore, are concentrated in Western Kazakhstan around the city of Atyrau. To my understanding I think each of these fractions boils at a different temperature range. That is because the different sizes of their molecules. One bad thing about crude oil is that it can’t be used in its own form, so the humans diffract it into many other things such as petrol, lubricating oil, naphtha, kerosene etc. At the bottom of the fractional column they use longer chains with more carbon atoms and at the top of the fractional column it has a cooler temperature and the chains are quite short. Hydrocarbons with low boiling points can get all the way to the top before they condense. The crude oil is evaporated and its vapours allow it to condense at different temperatures in the fractional column. My sources have told me that hydrocarbons are chemical compounds composed of only carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms. Each hydrocarbon has a different boiling point. This is handy because they use the different boiling points to separate the hydrocarbons.
