Critical Period Hypothesis

...Literary Criticism is, as Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), the Victorian poet and critic points out, a "disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate" the best that is known and thought in the world. And he strove hard to fulfill this aim in his critical writings. Attaching paramount importance to poetry in his essay "The Study of Poetry", he regards the poet as seer. Without poetry, science is incomplete, and much of religion and philosophy would in future be replaced by poetry. Such, in his estimate, are the high destinies of poetry. Arnold asserts that literature, and especially poetry, is "Criticism of Life". In poetry, this criticism of life must conform to the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty. Truth and seriousness of matter, felicity and perfection of diction and manner, as are exhibited in the best poets, are what constitutes a criticism of life. Poetry, says Arnold, interprets life in two ways: "Poetry is interpretative by having natural magic in it, and moral profundity". And to achieve this the poet must aim at high and excellent seriousness in all that he writes. This demand has two essential qualities. The first is the choice of excellent actions. The poet must choose those which most powerfully appeal to the great primary human feelings which subsist permanently in the race. The second essential is what Arnold calls the Grand Style - the perfection of form, choice of words, drawing its force directly from the pregnancy of matter which it conveys. This,......

Complaints

...To Whom It May Concern: This is a formal complaint of our experience with the RIU Palace Paradise Island. We checked into the RIU Palace Paradise Island on Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at approximately 3:00 PM. Upon check-in we were greeted by Front Desk staff member, Felicity, where she assigned us RM 804. Before we got into the elevator to go to our room, she stopped us and said she needed to change our room. After a few minutes we were then changed to RM 1202. Upon arrival to the room we were greeted by construction workers who were making repairs to the room, we also found another guest’s belongings residing in the room. While in transit back to the front desk, we were met by Felicity again, who said she changed our room to RM 817, and handed us another set of keys. When we reached to the 8th floor, we were greeted by a plethora of construction workers on the floor, in which we had to maneuver our way through and around them to get to our room. Upon arrival to our room, the first light to enter the room did not work, there were exposed electrical outlets, some questionable liquid white substance on the dresser where the TV sits, also various holes in the wall, in addition to the sprinkler being exposed, and none of the lights working in the room. We went back to the front desk to make a complaint, and they transferred us to RM 902. After retrieving our luggage from RM 817 and carrying it to RM 902, we found the door open, and were greeted once again by construction......

Maintrel Case Study

...exhibited by Jack Manning, are poor decision making. Instead of promoting Mark Rogers to a permanent position of Engineering Design Supervisor, he brought in another man (Hugh Horton) instead. It seemed clear that Mark was well qualified for the position. Multiple other problems involve around the Calgary project with the main subject being poor leadership. Bert Phillips is doing a poor job as the Calgary project manager (he doesn’t seem motivated) and he has been given too much power (in charge of the entire Calgary project). Another problem is the disregard to Mark’s report, as well excluding him from the meeting. Another issue (rather than a problem) is that Maintrel is on tight terms with Felicity, and therefore if they do poor on the Calgary project they are risking no future business with Felicity. The last sub-problem is that Mark (one of the best workers) has put in his one month notice to quit, and if Jack does not let this happen, he will address this to the higher ups which will not look good on Jack. Analysis I have concluded that the main issues/problems in the case all revolve around poor leadership. In the engineering section of Maintrel leadership skills are not where they should be. An effective leader must be able to make good decisions, influence individuals to work toward achieving certain goals, build relationships and giving-seeking information (taxonomy of leadership behaviours). The main leader to this section of Maintrel is Jack Manning.......

Desalination Research Paper

...competitively—at a cheap rate—get fresh water from salt water,” observed President John Kennedy nearly 50 years ago, “that would be in the long-range interest of humanity, and would really dwarf any other scientific accomplishment” ("Tapping the oceans"). This futuristic design has firmly remained in North America and even water-poor regions like the Middle East, and Singapore have installed sizable plants (Berringer, Felicity). As the population increases in the United States, and the lack of freshwater continues the idea of desalination of seawater needs to be accomplish. In Carlsbad, California, the inverse osmosis plant cost $1 billion with an affordable technology and showing that the desalination is not an energy-sucking. There are many critics that claim the cost of the plant but now the plant is on the menu of water sources that United States will need in the future. The plant in Carlsbad is being considered for several specialists not only for the performance, nor the impact on the marine environment, instead in the financial structure (Berringer, Felicity). The facility is the largest in the Western Hemisphere, producing 50 million gallons of drinking water a day, enough to supply about 100,000 homes. The desalination of seawater is an effective way to provide fresh water in the Middle East and other arid regions. In the world, there are 13,080 desalination plants that offer more than 12 billion gallons of freshwater a day (Kranhold, Kathryn). All the plants......

Spelling Deficiency

...common usage, and different meanings of a word or homophones may be deliberately spelled in different ways to differentiate them visually. The emergence of an accepted standard spelling is a natural phenomenon. Leaders with Character

...comes from America's sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln: "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." This quotation—from a man who was tested as perhaps no other American chief executive has—makes it clear that character in leadership matters. Holding a position of leadership by definition implies holding power, and only people of good character can handle power properly. One could go so far as to say that character in leadership is where character matters the most. Today, however, moral character in leadership is not considered a first priority. The current political campaign reveals what the candidates' public relations experts deem to be important: centrist policies, good looks, felicity in public speaking, a lack of skeletons in the closet, an ability to attract contributions, a willingness to compromise, and a clean track record on the issues. Thanks to previous administrations, the public is now willing to forgive indiscretion and obfuscation in its leader as long as he gives them what they want....

...to make us envision the setting and to go beyond the five senses and use body language. First of all if you do not envision the setting then how do you really get in to the story? It would be like watching television with no picture. Furthermore if you can connect and make the characters unforgettable then you will have a successful short story. The setting I feel Is one if not the biggest part of the making a short story successful. If you cannot make the reader feel that they are in the story then you have little chance to be successful. Charlotte Perkins dose this in her story Yellow Walls. She gives a description of the house, “ A Colonial mansion a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house and a reach the height of romance felicity.” She also gets on to describe the landscaping, “ there are hedges and walls and gates that lock and lots of separate little houses for the gardeners and people. Characters make up every story, as a writer you need to try and make the reader connect with the characters and make them become unforgettable. James Baldwin uses this in Sonny’s Blues while describing a couple characters. He starts with Sonny’s friend, “He was sort of shaking, his head and his eyes looked strange, as though they were about to cross. The bright sun deadened his damp dark brown skin and it made his eyes look yellow and showed up the dirt in his kinked hair. He smelled funky?” By this description you can already visualize this character. While there are......

...dessert. Right. Jolly good. I should like to see that very much. These images of Christmas cheer are miles away from where I sit now, at the Spence Academy for Young Ladies, forced to construct a drummer boy ornament using only tinfoil, cotton, and a small bit of string, as if performing some diabolical experiment in cadaver regeneration. Mary Shelley's monster could not be half so frightening as this ridiculous thing. The figure will not remind a soul of Christmas happiness. More likely, it will reduce children to tears. "This is impossible," I grumble. I elicit no pity from any quarter. Even Felicity and Ann, my two dearest friends, which is to say my only friends here, will not come to my aid. Ann is determined to turn wet sugar and small bits of kindling into an exact replica of the Christ child in a manger. She seems to take no notice of anything beyond her own two hands. For her part, Felicity turns her cool gray eyes to me as if to say, Su fer. I am. No, instead, it is the beastly Cecily Temple who answers me. Dear, dear Cecily, or as I affectionately refer to her in the privacy of my mind, She Who Inflicts Misery Simply by Breathing. "I cannot fathom what is giving you such trouble, Miss Doyle. Really, it is the simplest thing in the world. Look, I've done four already." She holds out her four perfect tinfoil boys for inspection. There is a round of oohing and aahing over their beautifully shaped arms, the tiny woolen scarves—knit by Cecily's capable hands, but of......
