Critical Thinking Application
Critical Thinking by some is thought to be as important as or more important than most material or physical items such as money, homes, or automobiles. So what is more important than critical thinking? Well, a couple of extreme examples to illuminate the point are food and water. They are without a doubt two of the most important items that our body requires for survival, and so it is with the application of critical thinking. In this paper I will discuss my understanding of critical thinking and relate it to a personal experience at work, showing its validity in the work environment. I will also explain its importance and benefits.
Critical Thinking
According to the National Counsel for Excellence in Critical Thinking Instruction, critical thinking is defined as “the mode of thinking about any subject, content, or problem in which the thinker improves his or her quality of thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them.”( Scriven, M., & Paul, R.,1987). Critical thinking involves how one goes about gathering, evaluating, and choosing information and the best methods in solving situations or problems. Critical thinkers are rational and focus strictly to the facts in order to analyze the issues at hand. They are open-minded to all possible options, think outside the box for new ideas, and recognize any bias in his or her thinking and decision making. Thinking is a part of everyday life and human existence but not everyone practices critical thinking.
Non-Critical Thinking
Everyday life consists of non-critical thinking. Non-critical thinking is done out of habit. They do not question his or her information, and their point of view is usually lacks any insight. Non-critical thinkers believe that what he or she perceives to be valid is true. They ignore the…...

...Emotional Thinking Style Emotional thinking will often involve very basic thought processes that are normally based on things that are already known, experiences, and events in life. How is critical thinking related to the emotional thinking style? Critical thinking enables each person to take active command of not only our thoughts, but our feelings, emotions, and desires. It is critical thinking which provides us with the mental tools needed to thoroughly understand how reasoning works, and how those tools can be used to take command of what we think, feel, desire, and do. Emotions are very important in everyday life and it drives each person to detailed attention, which in turn drives learning and memory. Emotions and instinct are part of human nature that is instilled in each and every person. Wen-Yu Chao (2006) states the following about emotional thinking “Emotions and feelings are not logical, but it doesn't mean they are bad. On the contrary, they are what make the world beautiful. Without them, we will lose music, paintings, sculptures, poems, and all wonderful creative work derived from the sensitive part of our mind. There is simply no way to argue without some sort of emotional bias. Emotions can be a great motivator for everything that happens in life. ...Big- picture thinking can be beneficial one must be able to use little thoughts and ideas to get to big dreams. “You have to think anyways, so why not think big?” –Donald Trump. Getting a clear perspective brings clarity to old thoughts and new goals. Big- picture thinkers are never fully satisfied, because they are constantly brainstorming of new ways to think and explore. Constantly thinking helps maintain a learner’s attitude and an open mind. Writing things down consistently helps the mind to keep generating new ideas as well. Listening on purpose or intentionally is also a great way to use others knowledge for one’s own benefit. Get the most out of every conversation, because there’s always room for growth in the mind. Make a point to partner with people that can do things that you cannot this will help generate questions and more thinking. When meeting new people a true thinker will always have an agenda to walk away with some type of new knowledge. Searching for big- picture influences argument, because one is able to visualize before other people do. Being a thinker that analyzes every situation from every angle can help one to build a vision on a strong foundation. Sketching scenarios out in the mind can help avoid challenges and obstacles that an average thinker may never think of. ...Personal Thinking Style Primary Style - Humanistic-Encouraging (Agree) Humanistic Encouraging style at work helped me to understand my employees need and satisfaction level while completing a project and it helps me to provide problem solving skills and confidence to take their responsibility of completion of the task. For me my colleagues are as important as task in my hands as their point of view is as important as mine. I prefer team tasks and seeing my colleagues achieve set of goals. ...Compare emotional and logical thinking When we compare emotional thinking to logical thinking, we find that there is a vast difference between the two. Emotional thinking can be defined as unnecessary influence of emotions on the thought process that can lead to selective or imbalanced decisions (Mehrabian, 2010). We can safely say that logical thinking is a learned process. This type of thinking is when an individual uses reasoning consistently when coming to a conclusion. Both types of thinking can and will be used in both personal and business decisions. Within an organization, logical thinking is preferred so that emotions do not overtake the decision causing further issues. Oftentimes when emotions get into the decision making process we have conflict within the team. Logical thinking is preferred so that we use our skills to create a step process to understand the facts and determine the correct course of action. This type of thinking is a more structured approach that enables teams to create a step process to come to a conclusion (Albrecht, 2000). A person has to know what type of problem he or she is dealing with to know what type of critical thinking style he or she would need to use. Knowing the difference of these four critical thinking styles will help people use critical thinking better. Logical Thinking Philosophy defines logic as the study of the essential truths and methodical methods for clearly expressing and thoroughly representing such truths (Jones, 1995). ...Personal Thinking Styles Based on the information presented in the survey, it is clear to see that my personal thinking style is highest for my affiliative style and approach. This is primarily because I like to ensure that I have support whenever I make my way in a test whether it is on an academic level or on a personal basis. My ability to forge these relationships with my cohorts is something that I value very much as I’m a strong believer that you learn more from the environments around you as opposed to a single textbook or other method of self-improvement or educational medium.
