Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness. It entails the examination of those structures or elements of thought implicit in all reasoning: purpose, problem, or question-at-issue, assumptions, concepts, empirical grounding; reasoning leading to conclusions, implications and consequences, objections from alternative viewpoints, and frame of reference. Critical thinking in being responsive to variable subject matter, issues, and purposes is incorporated in a family of interwoven modes of thinking, among them: scientific thinking, mathematical thinking, historical thinking, anthropological thinking, economic thinking, moral thinking, and philosophical thinking.
I work for a company that manages properties (Timeshare Industry), on the first week of my employment; I was asked to evaluate the goal of improving the property’s competitiveness in the marketplace. The goal was to implement new guest service ability to access the internet from the guest rooms. I was astonished by that request, but keep focus on the steps that I should consider. The approach I took was the planning process. I took this approach because planning is the process of creating goals and objectives. I was giving a day to create a list of questions to be presented at management…...

...Thinking Critically Simulation Review Problem solving tools and techniques As a group we decided on using a couple of problem-solving tools, brainstorming and cause and effect/fishbone method. The first step we did was to define some of the problems facing Credenhill’s. The biggest problems were; sales falling continuously for the past eight weeks, (especially in the high-end product categories), legal action notice from the city, regarding a disability access law, high competition with a new store a block away, and a loss of a manager and employees to the competition, $80,000 unsold inventory, problems with the Wide Area Network (WAN), and unhappy employees. We use the Man-Method-Material-Machine format to help us organize our brainstorming solutions into categories. We started using brainstorming, all ideas presented were discussed and considered. Ideas were then added them to the fishbone under the correct category. It helped for all of us to brainstorm, generating numerous ideas to help fix the problems. After we were done with our brainstorming of ideas, each team member presented their idea more thoroughly. A letter was assigned a letter to each idea on the diagram, and each group member was given a piece of paper. On the paper we categorized the problems, causes, and ideas to fix the problem, then we went around our group, totaling the values. The highest ranking value was declining sales in the last eight weeks. We decided with more advertising, return......

...MGT 350 Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a very important in life, but probably more is it important than in the workplace. Inside the workplace can be hectic, and it can be easy for a person to be overwhelmed. There are assignments to complete, deadlines to be met, coworkers and management that have to be consulted with regarding strategies. With all these things going on inside the workplace, a person can easily lose focus which is why critical thinking is very important when inside the workplace. When a person is can properly critical think they are more likely to be to make calculated decisions, instead of making a rational choice a person thinks the problem through and considers the pro’s and the cons. In the social working field a person has to always have to be in my thinking because I work with the public and that can be a very stressful situation. I am case manager for “The Center for Family Resources,” which is a nonprofit organization that helps families with children under the age of 18 with rent assistance, food assistance, transitional housing, and G.E.D. programs. It is a stressful environment because we’re dealing with families who are desperate for...

Emotional Thinking Style Mgt/350

...Emotional Thinking Style Emotional thinking will often involve very basic thought processes that are normally based on things that are already known, experiences, and events in life. How is critical thinking related to the emotional thinking style? Critical thinking enables each person to take active command of not only our thoughts, but our feelings, emotions, and desires. It is critical thinking which provides us with the mental tools needed to thoroughly understand how reasoning works, and how those tools can be used to take command of what we think, feel, desire, and do. Emotions are very important in everyday life and it drives each person to detailed attention, which in turn drives learning and memory. Emotions and instinct are part of human nature that is instilled in each and every person. Wen-Yu Chao (2006) states the following about emotional thinking “Emotions and feelings are not logical, but it doesn't mean they are bad. On the contrary, they are what make the world beautiful. Without them, we will lose music, paintings, sculptures, poems, and all wonderful creative work derived from the sensitive part of our mind. There is simply no way to argue without some sort of emotional bias. Emotions can be a great motivator for everything that happens in life. However, the emotional thinking style, unlike the logical thinking style, is often not based on a great deal of facts and it often requires very little thinking. The logical thinking style is......

...Critical Thinking Shirl McRee MGT/350 November 2, 2010 Brandon Johnson Critical Thinking What is critical thinking? This term has many meanings to everyone on the globe. To some people it is the meaning of positive thinking and to many others it is the process of thinking clearly and concisely without bias or prejudice. “Critical thinking is a rich concept that has been developing throughout the past 2500 years.  The term "critical thinking" has its roots in the mid-late 20th century.  We offer here overlapping definitions, together which form a substantive, transdisciplinary conception of critical thinking” (Criticalthinking.org, 2009). What is Critical Thinking? “Critical thinking is here assumed to be reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do. This rough overall definition is, we believe, in accord with the way the term is generally used these days. Under this interpretation, critical thinking is relevant not only to the formation and checking of beliefs, but also to deciding upon and evaluating actions. It involves creative activities such as formulating hypotheses, plans, and counterexamples; planning experiments; and seeing alternatives. Furthermore critical thinking is reflective -- and reasonable” (Criticalthinking.net, 2010). Critical thinking is a way of life for most people. They have no bias judgments, no prejudices that are even talked about on a daily basis, or even seen. They live a life of thinking...

Critical Thinking

...Critical Thinking Mark Distor December 12, 2010 Mgt 350 Richard Gilrane Critical thinking is a valuable tool that is able to help in the decision making process. According to the Taber Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, critical thinking is the ability to interpret argument, evidence, or raw information in a logical and unbiased fashion. Critical thinking is the systematic monitoring of thought with the end of improvement (Paul, & Elder, 2006). It is the act of analyzing thinking and making improvements on thoughts and ideas. Thinking critically allows a person to recognize strengths and weaknesses and improve on their thinking patterns. Critical thinking helps aid the decision process in analyzing thinking and making better and improved decisions. For example, working as a teller at Chase Bank, I had to think critically about every customer and situation that I was put in. My managers at Chase always stressed the importance of selling new accounts, credit lines, and other banking features that were available to customers. To do this, I had to analyze the customer and decide in a split second how to approach each individual customer. I had to evaluate and decide whether I was going to hard sell the customer or take the slow approach and show why they would benefit from our accounts, loans, and credit lines. Analyzing and thinking outside the box enabled me to characterize each customer and decide what was the best approach to catch their attention. ......

...Critical Thinking Application Paper Name MGT 350 Instructor Date Campus Critical Thinking Application Paper How do you think? How you think can be as important as what you think. When a person is faced with a problem, it is how a person thinks and acts on those thoughts that determine the outcome. To stay competitive organizations need to change or modify their methods of doing business as needs require. Everyday business professionals are presented with situations and problems, mundane and difficult, each requiring the person to use critical thinking. How that person analyses the situation can either benefit or hinder the organization. The decision making process is an important function of any business, critical thinking is the key to this process. What Is Critical Thinking?   “Critical thinking is the art of thinking about thinking while thinking in order to make thinking better. It involves three interwoven phases: it analyzes thinking, it evaluates thinking, and it improves thinking” (Paul & Elder, 2006, p. xvii). This tells us to think about the problem, analyze the problem, and solve the problem. To understand critical think a person must understand how to think.       Analysis allows the person to view a problem from different points of views, to study it and question it. When analyzing a problem the person must try to set aside any preconceived bias and view the problem objectively. The analysis step of critical thinking is the beginning...

...University of Phoenix Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision Making MGT/350 Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a way to process information that can be developed by people to gain a better sense of their own position in relation to their environment and the actions of those around them. It can be used to either clarify or cloud the information being processed depending on the level of development of the critical thinking skills. It can be said that everyone uses critical thinking but the degree which it is used will vary depending on the individual. A comparison between weak sense thinkers who do not have well developed critical thinking skills and fair minded thinkers that do illustrates this point. A weak sense thinker will ignore, rationalize, manipulate and sometimes lie to establish that their view is the correct one. This is because the individual does not utilize all of the tools to develop a more refined ability to process information and as a result they will not consider all of the viewpoints, questions and subsequent challenges that will arise. This is exemplified by radio talk show hosts who use rhetoric and in some cases insults and sheer volume to disparage and diminish their opponent’s views or politicians who will resort to cheating to win at any cost. These types of thinkers are also referred to as sophists. “Sophistry is the art of winning arguments regardless of whether there are problems in the thinking being used, regardless of whether......

Critical Thinking

...PATRICIA PINNOCK MGT/350 February 15, 2012 MR. PITTER   The purpose of this paper will be to describe critical thinking and examine how critical thinking skills can be used to foster solutions to universal problem solving. Michael Scriven & Richard Paul define critical thinking as “the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action” (Critical Thinking Community, para. 3, 2009). Using critical thinking skills allows people to construct the best solution in all circumstances. Critical thinking skills are developed by analyzing conscious thought to develop rational solutions to problems. Most decisions are with immediate gratification in mind, long term decision-making requires reflection and critical thought (Paul & Elder, 2006). People who make irrational decision fail to use critical thinking to devise solutions. Using critical thinking skills allows people to make decisions that yield the best possible solution based on a given set of alternatives. Thinking critical requires the development of specialize thought processes. Critical thinkers are able to evaluate, reason, and identify the best solution. Personal Critical Thinking Experience Two days ago, I was faced with situation that required me to come forth with the management team to......
