The study is entitled Combined solution of Garlic (Allium sativum) and
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). Specifically, it sought to find out how these two solutions (lemongrass and garlic) can effectively kill mosquitoes. It aimed at looking for an organic and safe measure in treating the abundance of mosquito. Ideally, the researcher’s study promotes a tandem between science and creation’s conservation. The materials composing the solution were 40 mL of the combined solution of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and Garlic (Allium sativum). The set up was composed of experimental and control group. The experimental group was being sprayed using a specific commercial pesticide. On the other hand, the control group was being sprayed using the organic mosquito killer. Data were collected to gather relevant information. In the light of the findings of the study, it was found out that the solution composing of 40 mL solution of Garlic (Allium sativum) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) extract can kill mosquitoes in a short span of time compared with the commercial one. It took only _________before the mosquitoes died.

Mosquitoes are vector agents that carry disease causing viruses and parasites that lead to life-threatening diseases from one person to person without catching the disease themselves. It prefers people over others. The preferential victim’s sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide and other compounds that make up the body odor. A large part of the mosquito’s sense of smell is devoted to sniffing out human targets. Mosquitoes are estimated to transmit disease to more than 700 million people…...

Antibacterial Effect of Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) and Allium Sativum (Garlic) Aqueous Extract on Some Selected Bacteria of Veterinary Importance

...ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECT OF Zingiber officinale (GINGER) AND Allium sativum (GARLIC) AQUEOUS EXTRACT ON SOME SELECTED BACTERIA OF VETERINARY IMPORTANCE Abstract Key words Introduction The ability of a substance to inhibit or kill bacteria is known as antibacterial activity. Such substances include chemotherapeutic agents which are products of roots, bark, stems and leaves of plants. In some cases, these products serve as cheap and effective alternative to orthodox drugs. A recent survey in the United State of America revealed an expected 20% annual growth in herbal medicine in the next 5 years (Saxena, 2004) with an estimated 80% of the world population living in the developing countries still relying on plants for health care. Due to the large dependence on traditional health care practices, World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the implicit role of herbal medicine in the Alma Mata declaration of Health for All by the year 2000AD in 1978. Zingiber officinale, or common ginger which is one of the frequently used medicinal plants is native to South-East Asia. The plant has slender reed-like stems with dark glossy green leaves arising from tuberous rhizomes. Ginger has been used for centuries as flavouring and as a treatment for all sorts of ailments from motion sickness to athletes foot (Richard et al., 2005). Ginger compounds are active against a form of diarrhoea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. Zinerone is likely to be the active...

...biting or stinging pests. The pests include all insects, example, the mosquito is responsible for spreading malaria, as well as ticks which spread Lyme disease. The citizens of first world countries typically tend to become infected through the bite or sting of insects and bugs while they are abroad. Indeed, travelers to exotic locales are often affected by nasty diseases transmitted by insects or bugs and bring such disease home with them. The greatest dangers lurk closer home and one need not travel across the world to face tiny pests. Many local insects and bugs in North America can cause serious diseases. Therefore, protecting the entire family through the prudent use of good quality insect and bug repellents is a necessity. Insects and bugs as vectors Each year, millions of people die from diseases transmitted by insects and other pests acting as vectors - an organism that acts as a host or carrier of some minute pathogenic organism that it transfers or transmits to a human host. In the case of malaria, for example, the mosquito is a vector, while malaria is actually caused by the protozoan parasite plasmodium. The human being is the final host. Not all diseases passed on by biting or stinging pest results in deaths, however, the issue is a serious one and protection from stinging or biting insects and bugs has been a major human concern down the centuries. The most familiar insect pest is the mosquito. These flying insects acting as major vectors have been......

...spoilage; however, it must be recognised that the presence of sporebearing organisms could become active once that water is reintroduced. ANHYDROUS In a similar vein, one could make products with materials that do not contain any traces of water, i.e. to deliberately design and formulate a totally anhydrous product. However, creams that can be finished by the consumer, by introducing water to the blend of oils, fats and waxes are prone to the same restrictions as the dessicated products. SALT The use of extreme levels of salt as used by the ancient mariners to preserve their meat is effective and it very likely that the preservation of the Egyptian mummies was, in part, achieved by the 40 day treatment in natron (a concentrated brine solution that osmotically drained the tissues of water). COLD Placing a product in the cold merely 'stops the clock' on microbiological growth and this is perfectly fine, provided the product was sterile when it was placed in the cold and/or had sufficient preservative 'mass' to counter any new organisms subsequently introduced. ACID pH The preservative activity can be boosted by operating at as low a pH as possible. Natural acidity could be obtained from one of the many of the alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which are obtained from citrus species, where the major components are citric and malic acids. Incidentally, it is surprising that expensive sources of natural alpha hydroxy acids are being contrived, when the producers of baobab oil are......

...Executive Summary Mosquito related diseases are a significant factor when public health is discussed in developing countries. In India it self, there have been a great concern regarding the same. The group decided to take up this topic as it related to the common man. This study dig deeps into the kind of perception people have when it comes to purchase ans use of mosquito repellants. A questionnaire was prepared which had questions pertaining to 9 different aspects of mosquito repellants. They were carefully drafted and the options given to them was well thought of. The questionnaire was floated online and response were collected. Facebook, Gtalk ,Gmail and Yahoo mail were used as medium to collect responses. Once they were systematically collected Factor analysis was run on them to reduce the factors to a reasonable level. The idea behind this was to classify the existing factors into 3 to 4 broad classification and understand the dependency of those factors amongst them. This would help us make recommendations to manufactures of mosquito repellants as to what they should concentrate on while making , promoting and selling their brand. Factor analysis was successfully done on the collected data and the 9 factors were clubbed under 4 broad headings based on the factor loading Utility Brand reliability Availability Feel good factor According to the study these factors capture most of the parameters that are related to mosquito repellant industry.......

Mosquito Trap

...Republic of the Philippines Department of Education Region V (Bicol) Schools Division of Albay Bacacay East District Tanagan Elementary School Bacacay [pic] Science Investigatory Project presented to the Panel of Judges of 2015 Division Science Fair September 17, 2015 Camalig North Central School Camalig, Albay Presented by: ALEX BENDO Researcher ROCKY RABINO Research Adviser 2 Abstract Purpose One of the best ways to keep a yard clear of biting mosquitoes is to use a mosquito trap. When set up properly, just one or two of these ingenious devices can kill thousands of mosquitoes and all but wipe out a local population. The style of trap varies by brand, but generally they range from indoor units the size of air purifiers to large units that resemble barbecue grills. Some run on electricity, while others are powered by propane tanks. You can easily reduce the number of mosquitoes on your property with a plastic bottle trap that will attract and kill the mosquitoes. The liquid in each trap will last about two weeks, and then, it can be easily replaced. For increased effectiveness, place multiple traps around your house or property. Procedure Used Get a large 2 liter Coke/Pepsi/Fanta, etc plastic soda bottle. This is the kind that takes a couple of hands to hold onto. Empty the bottle by drinking or draining. Take the cap off and throw away. Just below the point where the neck of the bottle straightens out onto the body of......

Neem Oil, Lemongrass and Atis Leaves as Mosquito Repellent

...especially the young children, are strongly advised to use various mosquito repellent products, however, we cannot assure that these products are safe to use. Since most of them are made out of chemicals, we can say that they are expensive and may damage the skin or even cause death due to high poisonous chemical content. The proponents have decided to create a mosquito repellent out of neem seed kernels, atis leaves and lemongrass. These plants have active insect-repelling ingredients that are just as effective as DEET, a toxic chemical present to most of the mosquito repellents. There were two processes involved in making the repellent. These processes are extraction by decoction and filtration. Each of the ingredients was decocted individually in a casserole with water. Afterwards, filtration was done to separate the liquid from the extracted ingredient. The extracts were then mixed together. Tests were undertaken to determine the repellent’s effectiveness. Three setups were made and each had the same number of mosquitoes. The natural mosquito repellent was applied to Setup A, a commercial mosquito repellent to Setup B, and nothing to Setup C. Three weeks after performing the test, the observations were then made. In Setup A, approximately 80% of the mosquitoes’ population were eradicated. In B, about 85%, and in C, about 10%. The tests showed that the natural and commercial mosquito repellent were somewhat the same in the results and closely......

Antimicrobial Property of Garlic (Allium Sativum) Leaves Against Staphylococcus Aureus

...ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTY OF GARLIC (Allium sativum) LEAVES AGAINST Staphylococcus aureus An Undergraduate Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Natural Sciences College of Arts and Sciences San Beda College- Manila In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For BIO31 By: Larraine Love N. Muyalde April 2016 CHAPTER 1 Overview of Research Problem INTRODUCTION Statement of the Problem/Objectives of the Study Garlic (Allium sativum) is widely known for its use as the usual condiment in various recipes.Garlic has many medicinal uses according to various studies. However Garlic leaves aren’t given attention to because there are few studies about it. A small number of people use Garlic leaves as a part of their recipe. However, garlic leaves also contain an amount of what the garlic bulb has. Although most scientific studies have investigated the effects of garlic bulb, the leaves offer a similar profile of benefits and risks. Allicin, the primary active constituent of garlic bulb, appears in lower amounts in the leaves or chives of the plants (Russo,J. 2013). Garlic can rightfully be called one of nature’s wonderful plants with healing power. It can inhibit and kill bacteria, fungi, lower (blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar), prevent blood clotting, and contains anti-tumor properties. It can also boost the immune system to fight off potential......

...that use bay leaves will recommend their removal after the cooking process has finished. ( CHIVES Chives is the common name of Allium schoenoprasum, an edible species of the Allium genus. A perennial plant, it is widespread in nature across much of Europe, Asia and North America. The name of the species derives from the Greek skhoínos (sedge) andpráson (leek). Its English name, chives, derives from the French word cive, from cepa, the Latin word for onion. Chives are a commonly used herb and can be found in grocery stores or grown in home gardens. In culinary use, the scapes and the unopened, immature flower buds are diced and used as an ingredient for fish, potatoes, soups, and other dishes. Chives have insect-repelling properties that can be used in gardens to control pests. The Romans believed chives could relieve the pain from sunburn or a sore throat. They believed eating chives could increase blood pressure and act as a diuretic. Romanian Gypsies have used chives in fortune telling. It was believed that bunches of dried chives hung around a house would ward off disease and evil. Uses Chives are grown for their scapes, which are used for culinary purposes as a flavoring herb, and provide a somewhat milder flavor than those of other Allium species. Chives have a wide variety of culinary uses, such as in traditional dishes in France, Sweden and elsewhere.[16] In his 1806 book Attempt at a Flora (Försök til en......

The Health Benefits of Garlic

...Health Benefits and Uses Various garlic health benefits and medicinal properties have long been claimed and it has been used extensively in herbal medicine (phytotherapy). It's been considered by many to be a herbal "wonder drug", with a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague! Amongst other things raw garlic is used by some to treat the symptoms of acne and there is some evidence that it can assist in managing high cholesterol levels. It can even be effective as a natural mosquito repellent. Some people who want the claimed health benefits without the taste prefer to take garlic supplements. These pills and capsules have the advantage of avoiding garlic breath. Garlic Health Facts Some of the old stories of garlic's healing powers have doubtful validity, but many of its properties have been backed up by modern scientific facts and research. There are two main medical ingredients which produce the garlic health benefits: allicin and diallyl sulphides. Garlic is a sulphurous compound and in general a stronger tasting clove has more sulphur content and hence more potential medicinal value. Some people have suggested that organically grown garlic tends towards a higher sulphur level and hence greater benefit to health. In my experience it certainly has the best taste. Benefits Modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. The bacteria in the...
