The struggle of accepting who you are
Amy Tans story “A Pair of Tickets”, the narrator shows they are in denial of her nationality; she doesn’t want to accept that she is of Chinese decent. It takes her going to China and living out her mother’s dreams that she realizes who she truly is. She has never seen this side of her family and resents her mother for never bringing them up and feeling how it is not to be Americanized.
She feels betrayed because she found out her mother who is now deceased had two other children from a previous marriage that she had to leave while searching for food and help in Shanghai. During her visit her family reminisces and speaks of the memories they have of her mother, making her feel like she didn’t know who her mother truly was.
The narrator speaks a lot on family and how she feels separated from hers because she doesn’t know them. Her being raised with American way and her family being of raised Chinese, they are two different cultures with what she felt not much in common.
Visiting makes her realize this is something that she has been missing and wants to know more of. Looking back, she remembered speaking to her mother about being Chinese and realized that "once you are born Chinese, you cannot help but feel and think Chinese” This is what she is missing family and knowledge of whom she is. She is now in China to fulfill her mother’s dreams by finding her sisters.
The narrator shows how much of a loving, caring person she is. She wants to make her mother happy, even though she is now deceased. She wonders if her mother felt terrible for having her after having to leave her other children. The love that the narrator has for her father is precious; she feels the pain her father is having speaking about her mother. He is speaking of life his wife had before him.
She would dream…...

Literary Technique of “a Pair of Tickets” by Amy Tan

...The short story "A Pair of Tickets," authored by Amy Tan is a detailed analysis of issues that concern many people that are of a different descent but that have been residents or migrated to another country for a long time. The story was written in such a way that if one does not take cognizance of interpretation of stories; one may not really gesticulate what the author is trying to portray. The story was about a young American student on a journey for the first time to China with a plan of reuniting with her half-sisters for the first time after the demise of her mother. The writer made use of stereotypes and prevalence of internal conflicts in presenting the theme of the story to the readers for easy understanding. The Protagonist or narrator in the story namely “June May” and her father were travelling by train; “Amy Tan” the author shows both symbolic and physical setting used in the story. “June May” reeling the feeling of being a Chinese was quoted in the story as being transformed into a werewolf, being color blind and behaving as a typical Chinese will behave. It is worthy of note that June may is very ignorant of her culture such that she assumes that her behave stereotypically in an ignorant way because she was trying to portray to her that the Chinese culture is the best, hence when she was always trying to avoid being drawn into the drama of imagining herself as a Chinese girl, this was evident when she alighted from the train and said “I am in China, I remind......

Twisted Pair

...The Benefits of Twisted Pair The Benefits of Twisted Pair The current topology appears to be a bus topology. Everything is connected via coaxial cable and is referred to as passive, meaning that each computer on the network “listens” for data to pass by with its name. While this type of topology will suffice for small networks, it is not ideal for the current network at Ocper, inc. Another downside of the current topology is lag. While the network is small you may not notice the lag, or just assume the network is supposed to run this slow. Using coaxial cable as a network data path limits the amount of bandwidth available as well as the ability for two-way data flow. My recommendation would be to convert to twisted pair cabling. The twisted pair cable will allow you a larger bandwidth which in turn allows more computers to send more data across the network. Twisted pair will also allow two-way data flow, allowing for data to pass back and forth more effectively by “sharing” the bandwidth. For these reasons, twisted pair will allow you to transfer vital information back and forth across the network much more quickly, making the customer wait less. I would also recommend changing the topology to a star-wired Bus. A star-wired bus will allow you to isolate segments of your network and span it over greater distances. Isolating a segment of the network will allow you to place different security......

Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable

...The Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable Introduction to Networking October 29, 2013 Ocper Inc. is a small company that has no one dedicated to information technology or networking on the staff, and there are 20 Windows peer-to-peer client computers all connected via coax cabling. The president has indicated that the company plans to double in size over the next two years, but she is weary of drastically changing the computing environment. This is my first assignment, but I feel that I have a very good plan to help give them a faster, more secure, and efficient network. The first change that I would recommend would be to move away from a peer-to-peer network to a client/server network. I would explain that there are many advantages to switching to a client/server network such as (Dean, 2009): * User logon accounts and passwords for anyone on a server-based network can be assigned in one place. * Access to multiple shared resources (such as data files or printers) can be centrally granted to a single user or groups of users. * Problems on the network can be monitored, diagnosed, and often fixed from one location. * Servers are optimized to handle heavy processing loads and dedicated to handling requests from clients, enabling faster response time. * Because of their efficient processing and larger disk storage, servers can connect more than a handful of computers on a network. The advantages of a client/server far outweigh any possible disadvantages.......

Symbolism in “a Pair of Tickets”

...Symbolism in “A Pair of Tickets” The same way scratches on paper create language and just one look from an admirer creates a feeling of love in ones heart; symbolism can evoke emotion and meaning that generates magic in a story. I believe symbolism is a prevalent and unwavering theme weaved throughout Amy Tan’s short story “A Pair of Tickets.” Many things, such as the names of the characters, and the photographs they take in the story embody symbolism and turn this story into a remarkable account of family and how it is one of life’s unbreakable bonds. The importance of symbolism in this short story makes it come alive to the reader. To summarize of Amy Tans “A Pair of Tickets” we look at the main character, Jing-mei. She is on a train, with her father, heading to China to visit her family. She speaks of not feeling like she is really Chinese. Although all of her family is Chinese, she grew up in America because that is where her parents moved during the Japanese invasion of China. They first visit the town of Guangzhou, where her father’s great aunt is waiting to see them. This is the first time the reader gets a glimpse of Jing-mei being interested in her Chinese heritage. “The minute our train leaves the Hong Kong border and enters Shenzhen, China, I feel different. I can feel the skin on my forehead tingling, my blood rushing through a new course, my bones aching with a familiar old pain. And I think, my mother was right. I am becoming Chinese.” (Norton, 189.) They...

Ordered Pairs

...Niles Hernandez January 19, 2014 MATH203-1401A-06 Phase 2 Individual Project Part I The set of ordered pairs would be represented as shown below: {(Cowboys, Troy Aikman), (Jets, Joe Namath), (49ers, Joe Montana), Rams (Joe Namath), (Chiefs, Joe Montana), (Patriots, Tom Brady)} The directional graph would be represented as shown below: Domain Range This is a function because each member in domain only has one unique range. The reverse set of ordered pairs would be represented as shown below: {(Eli Manning, Giants), (Troy Aikman, Cowboys), (Joe Namath, Jets), (Joe Namath, Rams), (Joe Montana, chiefs) , (Joe Montana, 49ers), (Tom Brady, Patriots)} The directional graph would be represented as shown below: Domain Range This is not a function because there a multiple range elements for one domain. Joe Montana, for example has more than one range which is the 49ers and Chiefs. Part II The equation C(n) = 16+4n can be used by replacing n with the number of rows. Therefore, the sequence would be shown below: C(1)=16+4(1) = 20 C(2)=16+4(2)=24 C(3)=16+4(3)=28 C(4)=16+4(4)=32 C(5)=16+4(5)=36 So for the first 5 rows, the sequence would be 20, 24, 28, 32, 36 Since there are 50 total rows, in order to find the number of seats in the last row we would calculate C(50)=16+4(50) =......

Pairs Trading

...Pairs Trading: Performance of a Relative-Value Arbitrage Rule Evan Gatev Boston College William N. Goetzmann Yale University K. Geert Rouwenhorst Yale University We test a Wall Street investment strategy, ‘‘pairs trading,’’ with daily data over 1962–2002. Stocks are matched into pairs with minimum distance between normalized historical prices. A simple trading rule yields average annualized excess returns of up to 11% for self-financing portfolios of pairs. The profits typically exceed conservative transaction-cost estimates. Bootstrap results suggest that the ‘‘pairs’’ effect differs from previously documented reversal profits. Robustness of the excess returns indicates that pairs trading profits from temporary mispricing of close substitutes. We link the profitability to the presence of a common factor in the returns, different from conventional risk measures. Wall Street has long been interested in quantitative methods of speculation. One popular short-term speculation strategy is known as ‘‘pairs trading.’’ The strategy has at least a 20-year history on Wall Street and is among the proprietary ‘‘statistical arbitrage’’ tools currently used by hedge funds as well as investment banks. The concept of pairs trading is disarmingly simple. Find two stocks whose prices have moved together historically. When the spread between them widens, short the winner and buy the loser. If history repeats itself, prices will converge and the arbitrageur will profit. It is hard to......

Ticket Escalation

...Unit 6. Exercise 1. Ticket Escalation From what I understand that you have received complaints from department supervisors stating that support issues are not being met in a timely manner. A ticket escalation policy is a perfect idea. We definitely need to ensure business priorities are met while end-user expectations are too. I will draft a policy of how support requests will be prioritized. Each technical issue will receive a ticket number. Each ticket will contain the information from the bullet points above right along with the date, time and level of the technical issue. Supervisors of the respective department will receive a copy of each ticket and the systems admin will keep a copy on file for future reference. Each technical issue will be assigned a level and they will be levels 1, 2 and 3; Level 1 being a simple and normal issue, and level 3 being the most urgent and high prioritized. I will assign a level of each technical issue upon inspection of each report, whether it's remotely or in person. Higher prioritized (or level 3) issues will be handled first, being that these are most urgent and need immediate attention. Level 1 and 2 issues will be prioritized by department and it goes as follows: Customer service; Sales; Accounting; Marketing. We can better manage these business requirements by each department receiving a copy of the policy once it is finalized. Each employee of this company should get a copy and be aware of this new policy to avoid any confusion or...

A Pair of Tickets Summary

...Summary and Analysis Jing-Mei Woo: A Pair of Tickets Jing-mei is on a train to China, traveling with her seventy-two-year-old father, Canning Woo. As the train enters Shenzhen, China, Jing-mei begins to "feel Chinese." Their first stop will be Guangzhou. Like her father, Jing-mei is weeping for joy. After her mother's death, a letter arrived from China from her mother's twin daughters from her first marriage. These were the two children whom she was forced to abandon on the side of the road in 1944. Jing-mei's father asked Auntie Lindo to write back to the girls and tell them that their mother was dead. Instead, Auntie Lindo took the letter to the Joy Luck Club. Together, the women answered the letter, signing Suyuan Woo's name to it. Jing-mei agrees that she should be the one to tell her half-sisters about their mother's death. But after dreaming about the scene many times, she begs Auntie Lindo to write a letter to the sisters explaining that their mother is dead. Auntie Lindo does so. The train pulls into the station, and the visitors are met by Canning's great-aunt. The reunion is emotional. Other relatives join them. Jing-mei wins her young cousin Lili over with instant photographs from her Polaroid camera. They soon arrive at a magnificent hotel, much grander than Jing-mei had expected. Jing-mei is anxious to have her first real Chinese feast; however, the native-born Chinese family decides that they want to eat American — hamburgers, French fries, and apple......

A Pair of Stockings

...This story today is called "A Pair of Silk Stockings." It was written by Kate Chopin Little Mrs. Sommers suddenly acquires fifteen dollars, which seems like a large amount to her. Feeling important and wealthy, she considers how to invest her money, feeling that she must carefully spend the money. During the night, she thinks of a sensible use for the money. She determines that she should spend a dollar or two extra for Janie's shoes, so that they will last longer and be of better quality, and she plans to buy some fabric for her children's clothing. After that, she will still have enough money for new stockings and hats for everyone, which pleases her because her children will have new clothing for the first time in a while. Mrs. Sommers used to have more money long ago, before her marriage, but she does not worry about the past or the future, focusing mostly on the present. Mrs. Sommers is used to cheap purchase, but today she is tired and forgets to eat lunch. While sitting on a stool to rest before her shopping, she realizes that her hand has brushed against a pair of two-dollar silk stockings. She continues to feel the splendid fabric and asks the shop girl for a pair in her size. After choosing a black pair of stockings, Mrs. Sommers buys them and goes directly to the ladies' waiting room to change. For once, she abandons thinking about responsibility or about why she is so satisfied at her purchase. She sits in the room for a while, reveling in her......

Acc/250 Time Tickets and Expense Tickets

...Time Tickets and Expense Tickets Memo To: XXXXXXXXXX From: XXXXXXXXXXXX Date: XXXXXXXXXXXX We just purchased new accounting software for the company. Now we need to review the time and expense tickets. We will cover the information that is contained in each, how the information is utilized by the company and what are the differences and similarities between the two ticket types. Time tickets record employee and other vendor activities. These activities can be employee consultation with the vendor or they can be employee research activities. The activities can be logged at any time. The billing rate that is entered depends on the employee and type of account. Expense tickets record money spent by the company in support of customer requests. The expenses depend on the specific service done on behalf of the customer. They can include things like court fees, copying and faxes. Sales and invoicing applications depend on the information logged in the time and expense tickets. When in either the sales or the invoicing applications one can hit the “apply tickets and reimbursable expense”. This will take you to the timing and expense tickets applications where information that is already logged can be used to complete sales or invoices. In this part we need to note that the total expense is the price or service multiplied by the number of times the service was done. If there are any problems with this feel free to contact me at this number 555-555-5555 or my......
